The Great Poet Wang Wei's Views on Vegetarianism
Wang Wei was a famous poet in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. His talent is extraordinary. At the age of nine, he was literate, at the age of nineteen, and at the age of twenty-one, he was a scholar. He wrote many well-known poems in his life, among which the famous ones are Acacia, Shanju Holiday Thinking of Shandong Brothers, and Sending Yuan to Twenty Shores Xi, which are still widely read today. Wang Wei is not only famous for his poems "Kaiyuan" and "Tianbao", but also good at writing, painting and calligraphy, and he is also proficient in music. With these two stories, we can have a more comprehensive understanding of Wang Wei's outstanding talents.
In the seventh year of Kaiyuan (7 19), when Wang Wei was nineteen years old, he went to Zhaofu, Beijing to try to raise his head. There is a legend in Historical Records: "Wei is not crowned, and the title of the article is strange." One day in spring, Wang Qi took the princess to the first place and made him an actor. Wei Jin's new song Yu Lunbao was published. The Lord asked the maids to preach. Call the examiner to the first place and make a metaphor to solve the problem. "This story tells that Wang Wei won the admiration of Wang Qi when he took the exam in Beijing. Young Wang Wei is not only named for his articles, but also plays a wonderful pipa. Wang Qi personally took him to the princess's mansion, let him play an actor, and played his own song "Yu Lun Bao". The princess was very surprised. She not only asked the ladies-in-waiting to pass on this new song of Wang Wei, but also specially called the examiner and decided that Wang Wei was the first. The "inside story" of young Wang Wei turned out to be playing the pipa at the princess's house, which is really a great "anecdote" that makes people feel comfortable.
Another story was found in the official history, which was included in both the old and new Tang history. "Biography of Wang Wei in Old Tang Shi" said: "People have a musical score, but I don't know their names. Wei Shi said,' The third stack of' Nishang' is also the first shot.' It doesn't make any difference if good people gather musicians to pressure them. "Only according to the posture of the musicians in the painting, we can accurately conclude that the track being played is colorful feathers, and it happens to be the first beat of the third stack, which can prove Wang Wei's proficiency in painting and music. No wonder Wang Wei was a scholar in the ninth year of Kaiyuan (72 1), and his first official position in the imperial court was Dale City.
Apart from his artistic achievements, Wang Wei is most concerned about his close relationship with Buddhism. Wang Wei was born in 699, the second year of Emperor Wu's Holy Calendar. Speaking of the first year of Chang 'an (70 1), the historical era when he sang all day and wandered around was precisely one of the most developed periods of ancient culture in China. At that time, Buddhism flourished, monks came forth in large numbers, and the imperial court gave gifts, and Pure Land, Huayan, Zen and Legalism further matured. Wang Wei's "Prajna begets Bodhi Family", and the whole family believes in Buddhism and forbids killing. Wang Wei's name itself contains Zen. His name is Wei, and the word ""is repeated. Anyone who knows a little about Buddhism will know that there is a Vimalakīrti Sutra in which the elder Vimalakīrti is a great Buddhist praised by Sakyamuni Buddha with profound Prajna wisdom and outstanding achievements. This classic is devoted to Prajna and is one of the fundamental classics of Zen. Wang Wei took Vimalakīrti as his name and character, which showed his admiration and revealed his deep fate with Buddhism, especially Zen. In Wang Wei's early poem "In Spring", there are poems such as "You can read biographies of eminent monks, you can see the edge of the valley" and "Peach blossoms in the north window, you can sit around and burn incense", which are full of enthusiasm for Taoism. He made a lot of friends with monks, among them, there are more than ten people recorded in the poem, such as Daoguang Zen Master, Tang Priest and Master, Zen Master, Tang Priest and Master, and Zen Master of the Sixth Ancestor's Association in Shangfa, almost all of whom are Zen monks. The laymen who are closely related to him are Hu Jushi, Xiao Jushi and Wei Jushi. And they are all entertaining themselves with Zen. For Wang Wei, a poet devoted to Buddhism, the visit of foreign experts and the making of like-minded friends naturally become an important part of his daily life, especially the main content of his seclusion.
Buddhism advocates the equality of all beings, and the kindness in all directions is boundless and unspeakable. Being kind without killing and being strict with others is an inevitable requirement of Mahayana Buddhism and a consistent tradition of Buddhism in the Han Dynasty. Wang Wei was born in a vegetarian family, and his mother Cui Shi began to take care of his hair when he was very young. Because of his fellow countryman relationship, he studied Taoism with a generation of famous monk Da Zhao (recorded as Da Hui in Biography of Song Monks) for more than 30 years, and he "ate brown vegetables and meditated by precepts" all his life (Please make a village look like a temple), which had a great influence on Wang Wei as a filial mother. The Wangchuan Mountain Residence in Lantian (namely Wangchuan Bieye) was inspired by Wang Wei's landscape poems and was purchased and built by him for the convenience of his mother's feasting, meditation and monasticism. Wang Jin, his younger brother, recorded in the Book of the New Tang Dynasty that he "always worships Buddhism, does not eat meat, and is especially careful in the evening festival", and even persuaded Li Yu, the emperor of Daizong, to believe in Buddhism. Wang Wei himself is a vegetarian all the year round, and the age of 20 is even more strict. "Old Tang Book" said that he "had nothing but a teapot, a mortar, scriptures and a rope bed." In Wang Wei's works, the lightness and peace of vegetarian life add a bit of comfortable elegance and aesthetic meaning. Wang Wei said: "A gentleman should be benevolent, benefit the country and the people" and "can't do whatever he wants", and his behavior will never deviate from his original intention. He sincerely praised the Germans: "Although the abbot is in the front, vegetables eat vegetable soup; Although it ranks high, it is empty after all. People love each other, but they look at their bodies like bubbles; Everyone is thick, but wealth is a cloud. " (Book with Wei Jushi) and "Compared with Buyi in the same year, I am too sweet to eat food" (Human Sacrifice to Li She Humanities) are noble characters and carefree broadmindedness. In the poem "Appreciating the Teacher", he wrote the poem "I swear to be a child, and I will never be a baby again", and I am determined to follow Buddhist teachings, master's commandments, abstain from killing, and diligently seek the way of being born. He said, "Set up a guard for rabbits and a guard for scaly fish. This is a safe mouth, not a concern of seclusion. My life is so clean that vegetables eat away the dust. " (Three Poems by Zhang Wudi) He expressed dissatisfaction with the behavior of catching rabbits and fishing because of his appetite, although he deliberately tried to retire. He marked his unique pursuit of vegetarianism, praising that vegetarianism can protect people's gentle and pure interests, and can be beneficial to the indulgence of material desires and soothe the nerves. He also praised the layman's strict self-discipline of "taking medicine and eating meat despite illness" (epitaph of King Jingzhao). His poem: "Sigh for the whole world, I would like to eat here." ("To Li Qi") expressed deep sympathy for the misfortune that the world was blindly driven by appetite and did not hesitate to kill each other.
In Wang Wei's poems, the perennial vegetarian life did not make him feel the slightest hardship, but made the poet's feelings more pleasant and moist. Please look at his poem "Influence Temple": "Quit poverty and return to Su Hua. Wild ferns grow around the fence, and cherry blossoms grow in the empty museum. Sweet rice and green rice, good vegetables and green taro soup. Swear to accompany Qing, sit and learn without life. " A bowl of green rice and a bowl of green taro soup are so beautiful in his eyes. There is also this poem: "I learned to watch the morning glory in the mountains calmly, and I learned to eat sunflower seeds with dew under the pine branches." (After the rain clears, my cabin in Wangchuan) describes a simple and natural vegetarian life, but it also has a detached aftertaste. Wang Wei's vegetarian choice is closely related to his pursuit of the ultimate goal in life. He believes that benevolence, virtue and generosity can touch everything in the world, and the universe could have been in its place and respected each other. There is a famous saying in the inscription of Zen master De Jingjue, the boss of Daan National Temple in Datang: "A tiger licks its feet and a poisonous snake smokes its body; Mountain gods offer fruits, while heavenly daughters scatter flowers. When giving a banquet, there is no joy and no fear. " Zan Jingjue Zen master's moral purity, which touched heaven and man and animals, was the best. In his poem "Three Plays for Zhang Wudi", there is such a pleasant poem: "My home is at the foot of Nanshan, and I am dying. Birds don't interfere with each other, and animals meet. " And "moss stone is clean, fine grass is soft." Birds are loitering outside the window, and Tigerheart is in front of the steps. "Facts have proved that people in nature can be so blind and free, and a picture of perfect harmony between man and everything in the natural world is panoramic and touching.
Su Shi said in Dongpo Zhi Lin: "There are pictures in the poem, which are fascinating; Look at the picture, there are poems in the picture. " It sums up Wang Wei's poetic mood well. The reason why Wang Wei has such a high artistic achievement lies not only in his all-round artistic accomplishment, but also in his lifelong thinking and practice of Zen. The simple and gentle vegetarian choice also kept him away from killing his career, cultivated a natural and calm intimate atmosphere, and more subtly appreciated and perceived the net beauty and harmony of nature. He said: "Lonely and lonely, my heart is idle with Guang Chuan." (Climbing the North Tower of the River) and: "In my heart, I have always been pure, just like this clear water." (Qingxi) It is precisely because he can look at the mountains and rivers with the eyes of the benevolent and the Zen, so his poems naturally have a quiet beauty, silence and openness that other poets can't reach. He wrote in the book "Dishes in the Mountains and Pei Xiucai": "Climb to Huazigang at night, and the water falls, rising and falling with the moon. In the distance, the cold mountain is shining, the fire is flickering, and the forest outside can be seen clearly. The dog barks in the alley, barking like a leopard. There was a flood of rice in the village, and the scattered bells staggered. Sitting alone at this time, the young man is speechless ... ". In this essay, the poet Wang Wei's quiet and elegant mind, quiet and calm heart, brings endless reverie, which can be said to be the best in poetry.
Wang Wei is outstanding in talent and excellent in character, especially famous for his sincere devotion to Buddhism in history books. Wang Wei is filial to his mother. After his mother died, he lost everything. His wife passed away very early. When Wang Wei was in his thirties, his wife died unfortunately. Since then, he has been lonely all his life. There is a history that says, "When my wife dies, she will never marry again, and she will live alone in one room for 30 years. The screen is extremely tired." It's very rare. Wang Wei accidentally wrote six poems in his later years. The sixth poem is: "Old people are lazy to write poems, and only old people follow them." Past lives were poets and past lives were painters. It is well known that you can't give up your studies. The names are all here, but I still don't know. "It can be seen as a summary of his life and is deeply influenced by Buddhism. There is a poem in the third poem: "Love is getting thinner and thinner, and Zen is getting quieter and firmer. "It can be seen that he has made great efforts in practicing Buddhism, which is also an excellent footnote for his own life.
