Trademark dispute
By 2000, Tencent's OICQ basically occupied nearly 100% of the online instant messaging market in China, and basically became the dominant player in the instant messaging industry in China. At this time, trouble came. AOL sent a lawyer's letter to Tencent. ICQ is a registered trademark of AOL, so any similar software that uses the word ICQ in its name is an infringement of its trademark use right. AOL asked Tencent to rename OICQ, otherwise it would go to court. Therefore, in the version of OICQ2000Build0325, OICQ made another self-protection change in advance. Version 0325 calls itself "QQ2000" from the beginning of the installation file to avoid legal conflict with ICQ. Later, for convenience, it was renamed QQ. QQ was originally a nickname for OICQ by netizens, but it became the new name of OICQ overnight.
Early development
200 1, Tencent first integrated advertisements in QQ. Before QQ2005 Beta3, TT browser was bundled with QQ installer and installed by default. Many early third-party QQ versions (such as Caoshanhu QQ and Mu Zi QQ) were originally designed to block QQ advertisements and some unnecessary software and plug-ins, and at the same time, many new functions were added to QQ, such as displaying IP addresses and checking whether friends are invisible. The third-party QQ version with the function of displaying IP address is usually called "IPQQ".
