Kiwifruit originated in China and was originally a wild fruit. Cen Can, a poet in the Tang Dynasty, wrote a poem "Li Laoshe sent his brother and nephew to stay in Taibai Dongxi", which contained the phrase "There is a kiwifruit on the atrium well", vividly describing the scene when people used kiwifruit to beautify their homes at that time. At the same time, the records in Notes on Materia Medica show that it was used as medicine at that time.

Kaibao Materia Medica, compiled during the Kaibao period in the Northern Song Dynasty (973-974), once recorded: "A vine pear, a Mu Zi pear, and a macaque pear." Some people say that it "looks like an egg with brown skin and is sweet and edible after frost." It can be seen from these records that the ancients ate it as a wild fruit. In the fifth year of Song Yuanfeng (1082), Tang said in Zheng Bencao: it tastes sweet and sour, born in the valley, creeping on the trees, with round and hairy leaves, and the fruit looks like duck eggs and goose eggs, with brown skin and sweet and edible after frost. In the sixth year of Song Zhenghe (A.D.116), the pharmacologist Kou Zongxuan recorded in Materia Medica Yi Yan: "Kiwi, there are many Nanshan in Yongxing Army (in Shaanxi), which is hot for food ... 10, which is light green in color, but just born. Perhaps it is the latter reason that makes it called kiwifruit. Of course, it had many aliases at that time.

"Anhui Tongzhi" said: "Kiwi, from yi county, belongs to carambola." Incidentally, the peach recorded by Li Shizhen is really kiwi fruit, but he didn't know it. He thought kiwi fruit was another kind of fruit, so it was divided into two parts: the grass part and the fruit part.

According to relevant historical records, this kind of wild fruit has been used by people in mountainous areas, but the way of utilization may be similar to that of Rosa laevigata, which has not been domesticated and cultivated. Wu's Textual Research on the Names and Facts of Plants in Qing Dynasty records: "Now it is found in the mountainous areas of Jiangxi, Hunan and Henan, and the villagers may hold it for sale in the market."
