In May 2008, 86-year-old Mr. Huang Borong led 20 teachers from Sun Yat-sen University and related institutions to compile Modern Chinese (medium and large edition) on the basis of the original textbook. The new edition of Modern Chinese solves the above two problems well. The new version is smaller, but the necessary content and weight have not weakened. Mr. Huang called it "slimming brain". Besides Mr. Huang Borong's disciples, there are also his disciples, which can be described as a work completed by three generations of mentoring.
After retirement, Mr. Huang Borong lived in his hometown Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province. At the age of 86, he learned many new technologies to cooperate with the compilation of teaching materials. He photographed his manuscript with a camera and sent it to other editorial members in Guangzhou by e-mail. Now the writing team still keeps hundreds of letters with Huang Borong. While writing, although I am nearly 90 years old, I still sleep every day 12 and get up at 4 o'clock to go to work.
"He is not an editor in name, but actually participates in the compilation of textbooks," said Well Lee, director of the Chinese Department of Sun Yat-sen University. He is so serious that he even thinks twice about using "autumn is coming" or "spring is coming" as an example in his textbook.
Before Huang Borong's death, Well Lee and his colleagues came to Yangjiang to visit the teacher, and brought the answers to the after-school exercises of Modern Chinese, a newly published version of Zhongda University, which was also the finishing project of the first publishing cycle of the textbook. Huang Borong was very excited when he saw the textbook. Although he can't pronounce it accurately, he keeps calling Well Lee's name.
Well Lee said with emotion, "He is a hard-working ox and willing to sit on the bench. Editor-in-chief for decades, constantly pursuing perfection, is the real gentleman. His research started from modern Chinese and ended in modern Chinese, and he never ran through the topic. "
Fu Yuxian, a professor of Chinese Department of Sun Yat-sen University, recalled a short story when Modern Chinese was published. At the conference on the compilation of Modern Chinese, Mr. Huang Borong was elected as the editor-in-chief and Mr. Liao Xudong as the deputy editor. Mr. Huang Borong has always respected Mr. Liao, who is seven years older than himself, and is the only professor in the editorial team. So, when he contributed to the publishing house in the spring of 1979, he quietly removed the word "deputy" from Mr. Liao's deputy editor, and finally the textbook became a co-editor.
