Each viewer in Leonardo da Vinci will display a GPU status indicator and a frame per second (FPS) table, which will appear in the title bar of the viewer and show the real-time playback performance of the workstation. ? The GPU status indicator shows how much computing power the clip being played uses (Leonardo da Vinci used one or more GPUs (graphics processing units) to process images and effects).
A green dot indicates that there is a lot of available GPU performance space. With the increasing GPU load, the green image eventually turns red, which indicates that the remaining GPU resources are not enough to maintain real-time playback.
Finally, with more and more adding effects and modifications, the hardware will reach the limit of usable performance, forcing Da Vinci to either lose frames or play video at a slower speed to maintain high image quality display.
When the real-time performance is insufficient, Leonardo da Vinci provides a variety of control options to optimize real-time playback and realistic effects. Each one is suitable for different situations and can work together, so you can strike a balance between image display quality and playback performance. All these methods can be configured, which has no effect on the final export.
2. Give priority to playing the audio or video in the clip page.
When one or more clips can't play smoothly (colors, transformations or effects applied to the clips can't be handled in time), you can choose what Da Vinci will do when his performance is insufficient by opening or closing Show All Video Frames in the Options menu of the Clip Page Viewer window.
Close all video frames: the default setting, which is very suitable for video editing. When the processing capacity is tight, audio will be played first, but some video frames will be lost, thus obtaining a more coherent playing experience.
Show all video frames: This is an ideal setting when you are dealing with visual effects, and you need to view each frame playback in sequence. The audio quality will be affected, and the playback speed of each frame of video will be lower than the real-time speed.
Remember that this setting is only available in. It is feasible in the case of insufficient GPU performance. In an area (segment) where the timeline has sufficient playback performance, playback is not affected.
3. Adjust the performance model to improve the overall performance.
Performance mode is located in the playback settings of user preferences. It will analyze your computer configuration, CPU, GPU, connected video interface, etc. And automatically adjust Leonardo da Vinci's image processing settings to provide the best interactive effect. By default, it is set to automatic, but you can choose to adjust its effect manually or disable it completely. When enabled, performance mode can significantly improve the experience of editing, mixing and toning on computers with poor performance.
When performance mode is turned on, Da Vinci will still export the video, keep the rendering in the delivery page, and still process the video with the highest quality through media management commands. Using performance mode will not affect the quality of the export, so creativeeditors and Mixer can always keep this setting.
Finally, finishing editors and colorists may notice that the images on the display are slightly different when the performance mode is turned on and off on computers with weak performance. When GUI interactivity is not as important as screen display, you can completely or partially disable this setting in the Play Settings panel of user preferences.
4. Adjust the performance mode
When you turn on performance mode in Leonardo da Vinci, a pair of radio buttons in the Playback Settings pane of preferences allow you to choose between automatic (default) and manual behavior. When set to automatic, the performance mode will automatically optimize various operations to balance performance and image quality, achieve fast interactive performance, and keep the exported video at the highest quality.
When set to manual, you can choose to disable three different optimization settings to cope with the obvious degradation of image quality caused by performance degradation:
Optimized resizing: It is related to how to handle image resizing.
Optimizing decoding quality is related to the processing methods of editing resolution and time axis resolution.
Optimized image processing: related to how to deal with image processing operations.
5. Use the timeline proxy mode to improve the effect and performance.
If you don't want to lose frames or play at a slower speed than real-time when the GPU status indicator is red, the direct way to improve performance is to turn on the Timeline proxy mode option in the play menu. Timeline agent uses Da Vinci's resolution independence to instantly reduce the resolution of clip playback, reduce processing requirements and improve real-time playback performance, without taking the time to cache part or all of the timeline or create optimized media files (discussed later).
To turn the use timeline proxy on or off, do one of the following:
Select play > timeline proxy mode >; Half resolution, quarter resolution or no resolution.
Press PROXYON/OFF on the T-bar panel of the DaVinci control panel (the default is the last proxy resolution you select from the menu. If no resolution is selected, the default value is half. )。
Regardless of the current timeline resolution of the project, selecting a timeline proxy will reduce the playback resolution by half or a quarter when editing. Temporarily reducing the resolution can improve the real-time performance of the workstation, and the resolution independence of Resolve can ensure that each window you draw and the resizing operation you do can be correctly scaled to the actual resolution of the project.
6. Reduce the decoding quality and improve the performance of the original media.
When the tone and effect cause the project to play slower than real time, using proxy commands can improve the performance, but when the real-time performance is exhausted due to the need to decode the original media, using proxy will not help. Although you can improve playback performance by taking the time to generate optimized media (see below), enabling smart caching (see later in this chapter) or rendering fused caching, the fastest solution is to open the CameraRAW panel in the project settings and reduce the decoding quality of the original media format you use:
Decoding quality: The original camera formats such as R3D and F65 can go to Bayer at different quality levels. In order to obtain higher real-time performance, you can choose a lower quality setting at work and then switch to a higher quality when rendering the final output.
The options for reducing the resolution vary according to the function of each original format, but at least include full resolution, half resolution and quarter resolution (R3D and SonyRaw have options for full resolution, half resolution, quarter resolution, eighth resolution and sixteenth resolution). Exceptions include CanonRAW, PanasonicVaricamRAW and PhantomCine formats, which can only be decoded to full resolution.
If you degrade the decoding quality of the original media format in the project, you can select the "Force Bayer to be the highest quality" check box in the Rendering Settings list on the Delivery page to ensure that Leonardo da Vinci exports with the highest quality available, without worrying about forgetting to change the decoding quality back when rendering.
7. Optimize media to improve overall performance.
If you are editing a processor-intensive source format, such as camera raw data, H.264 or 8K media, and your computer is not fast enough for real-time processing easily. You can create pre-rendered, low-cost copy media to use, which will be automatically managed together with the original media. This is the so-called "optimized media". Optimizing media allows you to edit with a more processor-efficient media format and resolution, thus speeding up your work, and you can easily switch your project back to the original source media at any time. Therefore, you can edit with optimized media and switch back to the original source media when you need to finish and output. Switching is as simple as turning optimized media on and off (choose Play >; Use optimized media (if available).
The advantage of using optimized media is that it is pre-generated, which means that you can render it once and then use these files during the project work (unless you change the Bayer setting of RAW media). In addition, the optimized media improves the playback performance of the entire Da Vinci clip, including the media pool and source viewer of the media page and clip page. However, the fusion output cache of intelligent cache only improves the performance of timeline playback (the principle is similar but different, and the fusion cache caches the clips already in the timeline with the timeline resolution). This makes optimizing media an ideal choice for various editing workflows.
Choose the right optimized media format for your project.
You can use the controls in the main settings panel of project settings to select the format of the optimized media you create. Note that the format you select through the Optimize Media Format menu will determine whether the out-of-bounds image data (also known as "overflow") and the Alpha channel are preserved when the clip is cached.
Prevent clipping: If you plan to use optimized media for color matching, you should use 16-bit floating point, ProRes4444, ProRes4444XQ or DNxHR444. This is especially true for HDR color matching.
Keep the Alpha channel: Also note that the format you choose will determine whether to keep the Alpha channel. At present, the uncompressed 10 bit, uncompressed 16 bit floating point, ProRes4444, ProRes4444XQ and DNxHR444 formats retain the Alpha channel.
8. Create optimized media
Creating optimized media is easy. Da Vinci will automatically manage the relationship between the source material and the optimized media created, so all you need to do is choose the material that needs to be optimized. You can manually select the material to be optimized, or you can use the Smart Bin to collect one or more media with optimized formats. In either case, you can choose to optimize only clips with optimized formats, thus saving you time.
For example, if you are editing a project that contains half camera original media and half DNxHD media, you may only need to optimize the camera original media so that you can create a smart material box (based on resolution, codec, file name or any other suitable metadata) to collect all these contents.
To create optimized media for one or more selected clips:
Right-click one of the selected clips and select Generate Optimized Media from the context menu.
All optimized media will be written to the same directory as the cache file, and the default is the first temporary disk listed in the Media Storage panel of the first option. The location of cached and optimized files can also be selected through the "Cache File Location" setting in the main settings panel of project settings.
9. Optimized culture medium for raw materials
Generally speaking, once you create the optimized media, no matter what changes you make to the project, including changing the timeline resolution, Leonardo will track it and continue to use it. However, any change to the CameraRAW setting of the optimized material will automatically discard the optimized media and need to be regenerated manually.
