At present, there are two main vaccines to choose from. One is live attenuated polio vaccine (sugar pill or liquid vaccine), and the other is inactivated vaccine. Oral live attenuated polio vaccine is a kind of vaccine, that is, the national immunization program vaccine, which does not charge any fees to the recipients. Inactivated polio vaccine is a second-class vaccine, which belongs to citizens' voluntary vaccination and is charged according to the pricing department.
"Sugar Pill" has been used in China for more than 40 years, and it is safe and effective to prevent polio. However, because "sugar pill" is an attenuated live vaccine, very few children are at risk of vaccine-related paralysis. This risk will greatly increase in children with immune deficiency or low immunity.
The virus in the inactivated polio vaccine is "dead", thus avoiding the risk of vaccine-related paralysis caused by "sugar pills". It can be used by healthy and immunocompromised children. It is effective after vaccination and is called "one of the safest vaccines" by the World Health Organization.
