This reverence first comes from fear. From the beginning, it couldn't wait to show its high cold, saying no to mediocre and timid drivers with a heavy and short clutch. 1 gear has no reaction time at all, even if you treat the throttle gently, you will still feel like your body is thrown out. Almost unconscious, I began to regain consciousness after I hung up second gear.
When it comes to Groupe Racing, people always describe it as a scourge. After all, the images of those accidents are so shocking. The burning Delta 4S car not only burns its racers and pilots, but also burns the tolerance of "civilized society" to the danger of racing. However, before the disaster arrival, they will not show the devil's side, at least not Rally 037. Compared with its predecessor, Stratos, it is as stable as a fortress, and at the same time it is extremely direct and sensitive. Every millimeter of the accelerator stroke is directly converted into a feeling of pushing back, as if you were stepping on the accelerator instead of pedaling.
After the speed gradually increased, Rally 037 continued to hide its devil face. If the driving experience of E90 3 Series can be described as steering wheel, then Rally 037 can be described as rear steering. As a Groupe B racing car, it seems to have amazing controllability.
However, I soon realized that this illusion is only because the driving skills of ordinary people like us are far from being able to spy out its limits. As Mario Andretti, a Grand Slam player who won the F 1, Indy, WSC and NASCAR, said, if everything seems to be under control, it only means that the speed is not fast enough. Look at the video of the' 83 competition, and you will understand that Rally 037 is like tango and 100-meter sprint.
In WRC, the 037 Rally was the last rear-wheel drive that really defeated the four-wheel drive opponent. Rally 037 won the championship five times in the 12 race in the 1983 season, and finally won the manufacturer's championship for Lancia. Unfortunately, due to the uneven distribution of points between Walter Rhrl and Marku Allen, the driver's championship was taken away by Mikkola who drove the Audi Quattro.
In the short five-year history of Groupe B, only four cars have won the championship of drivers or manufacturers, and Walter Rolle has driven three of them. 1982 won the driver's championship with Opel Ascona 400, 1983 switched to Lancia and Audi a year later. He has said many times that Rally 037 is his favorite racing car-although the German only stayed in Lancia for a short time for one year, he played for Audi for five years, and he often appeared in various publicity activities as an Audi celebrity.
Rolle described Rally 037 as a car that can make drivers "empathize". This is largely due to the traditional mid-rear-drive layout and the maintenance of supercharged engines. Of course, this technology choice is not out of emotion, but more of helplessness.
The introduction of Group B standards is equivalent to unlocking the curse of racing engineers. Its core principle is that cars must have produced at least 200 cars in the past 12 months. In addition, the vehicle weight and tire size are only limited by the exhaust volume. Intuitively, there are only five technical calibration documents of Group B given by FIA, but today such a length is not enough to standardize an F 1 wing.
In this situation, Lancia and abate, who are in charge of the research and development of racing cars, are aware of the potential of four-wheel drive, but they think that the remaining research and development time is too short, and rashly launching more complex technologies will inevitably bring additional risks. After the general direction was determined, we began to choose the basic model. At that time, some people in the company advocated making Rally 037 like Stratos, which was specially built for sports events. However, this proposal did not receive sufficient support. Obviously, a racing car with a production car coat is more conducive to sales. Alternative models include Lancia Delta, Beta Montecarol and Ritmo, a small car of the parent company Fiat. Delta and Ritmo were quickly rejected. On the one hand, their bodies are too compact, which will bring some troubles to the layout of the mid-engine On the other hand, Lancia also hopes to use the competition to promote their flagship sports car.
1June, 980, the project code-named SE037 officially started research and development. Although theoretically based on the Beta version of Montecarol, they have nothing in common except the front Logo. 13 1 and Stratos stacking technology played an important role at this time. From a certain point of view, the structure of SE037 is very primitive. Its cockpit can be regarded as a steel space capsule, and the front and back are connected by a frame made of welded steel pipes with a diameter of 25 to 30 mm. The engine, suspension system, fuel tank and various radiator pins are all installed in the frame structure made of steel pipes. Today's supercars still use a similar layout, but steel has become a carbon fiber composite and synthetic metals such as magnesium and aluminum.
In fact, you can also see a lot of new materials on the tension 037. In order to reduce the weight, plexiglass and magnesium alloy were used later. The door, fender and hood are all made of Kevlar fiber. At that time, the output of this kind of material was very small and the cost was very high, so the 200 trolley buses 037 Stradale produced to meet the competition rules were not eligible for use.
In terms of power, engineers struggled between turbocharging and mechanical supercharging. Lancia and abate have sufficient reserves of these two technologies. In some track events, Stratos with turbocharged engine has achieved good results in track events, while Fiat Abarth 13 1 with supercharged engine has won the WRC championship three times. Considering that the complex curve of the rally track will amplify the influence of turbo lag, the SE037 project finally chose the mature 2-liter inline four-cylinder supercharged engine as the power. EVO 1 used in 1982 has a maximum boost pressure of 0.9 bar and a maximum power of 280 HP. 1985 When it was last changed, the power of the EVO2 version had reached 350 horsepower. Therefore, the displacement of the engine was expanded to 2. 1 liter, the supercharging pressure was increased to 1.0 bar, and a water spray system specially used for cooling was installed.
This is the ultimate version that we test drive. The most striking feature is that there is no rear bumper. Like the Beta Monte Carlo, Pininfarina is also responsible for the design of Rally 037. The cooperation between the two companies can be traced back to the 1930s, knowing that 20% of Pininfarina's start-up capital comes from Lancia's support.
Leonardo Fioravanti, now the nominal design director of BAIC, is the former exterior designer of SE037 project, and his representative works also include Ferrari F40, 288GTO and other important models. He created a tough guy image for Rally 037, which originated from Beta Monte Carlo and was stronger than Beta Monte Carlo.
We can clearly see the shadow of the original car through the proportion of the figure and the simple and capable lines, but if we look closely, we will find that everything is different. Rally 037 widened the front and rear wheel tracks, making it more powerful. The classic martini painting makes this car legendary, but if you want to appreciate it better, you'd better look at the street version-BMW designers should study hard in particular, and you really don't have to make holes in the body to make the car look lethal.
To my surprise, this 30-year-old racing car can still fly easily on the ramp today. Perhaps many young fans can't understand why these cars with similar power to Golf R are described as "too fast to compete". The most direct example is 1986 Henry Toivonen's performance in driving Delta 4S at Lille Circuit in esto, Portugal, which can be ranked in the top ten before practicing F 1 that year. Shortly after that test, the French driver was buried in the car with his pilot.
