Women who are older than their mothers are generally politely called big sisters. Shanghainese call their mother Mommy. For example, my mother's small gathering, because of familiarity and frequent contact and communication, will be called a big mother older than her mother and an aunt younger than her mother.

But on other occasions, such as when I meet my mother's colleagues or friends at her workplace, I usually call them auntie.
