The direct cause of this movement is the persecution of Chinese workers by American imperialism. 65438+In 1940s, a gold mine was discovered in California. The western development needs a lot of labor, and the American bourgeoisie "recruits" China workers by various means. Many people from China crossed the ocean to come to the United States. In the 1980s, more than 300,000 China workers lived in the United States. Together with the American people, they have made indelible contributions to the development of the western region. However, with the intensification of contradictions in capitalist society, racist ideas are on the rise. Since the 1970s, atrocities of excluding Chinese, persecuting and even killing Chinese workers have occurred continuously. The Qing government not only failed to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese workers, but also signed with the United States in 1894 the Provisions of China and the United States Congress on Restricting Chinese Workers from Coming to the United States to Protect Chinese Living in the United States, which actually acknowledged the persecution of Chinese workers by the United States government. At the end of 1904, this unequal treaty expired. The people of China, especially the overseas Chinese living in the United States, strongly demand the abolition of the Treaty. Under the pressure of public opinion, the Qing government asked the American government to change the contract. However, the us government flagrantly refused to renew the contract, demanded unreasonable renewal, boycotted the American goods movement, and aroused.
The anti-American patriotic movement originated in Shanghai. 1in may, 905, local gentry and businessmen gathered in the general chamber of commerce, demanding that the Qing government refuse to sign the contract, formulating specific steps to boycott American goods, and calling on the ports of various States to act in concert. Guangzhou, Tianjin, Beijing, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Fujian and other places are all on the rise with great momentum. Within half a year, more than 200 gatherings were held in various places. Shanghai and Guangzhou have become the centers of the movement, and the wave of mass struggle has become more turbulent. Shanghai has established 24 organizations and participated in 76 industries. Women organized "China Women's Association" and children set up "China Boys Boycott American Dating". Teachers and students of American-run schools have left school and have to stop classes or dissolve. Jesuits in Shanghai also distributed leaflets expressing "sympathy" for the movement. In June, Guangzhou established "No Dating" and changed its name to "No American Goods Office for Treaty Boycott". More than 100 units from all walks of life such as business and academia participated in a wide range of activities. Anti-American patriotic propaganda is deeply rooted in people's hearts, and newspapers, speeches and concerts have aroused strong public opinion. In front of every house, there is almost a piece of paper that says "Don't buy American goods". Overseas Chinese have also taken various forms of struggle, such as remittance, solidarity and boycott of American goods, and actively cooperated with the anti-American patriotic movement at home. "The voice of justice resounded through the clouds and shook the world."
The vigorous development of the boycott of American goods shocked the American ruling class. Business owners strongly urge the US government to take measures to change the predicament. The President of the United States, the Minister in China and the Consul General in Shanghai put pressure on the Qing government. Some businessmen and missionaries in Huamei also criticized the boycott of American goods. Britain, France, Japan, Russia and other countries even put forward "advice" to the Qing government. Under the pressure of imperialism, the Qing government began to suppress the patriotic movement. In late August, the provincial governors were ordered to "strictly investigate" to prevent the continued development of the arrival movement. At the same time, in order to protect its interests in China, the US government finally gave up the request for renewal. After 10, the struggle gradually subsided.
This movement inspired the patriotism of China people and promoted the development of Chinese national capitalism to some extent.
