The concept of waist circumference
Waist circumference is the horizontal girth passing through the navel center, or the girth connecting the lowest point of ribs with the midpoint of the upper edge of iliac crest, and the horizontal girth passing through the left and right waist knots. It is measured with a soft ruler.
The size of waist circumference is usually influenced by gender, age and height. The waist circumference of normal men is larger than that of girls, and the thinnest part of men's waist is slightly higher than that of navel, while that of women is higher.
Waist circumference is a comprehensive index reflecting the total amount and distribution of fat, and it is also an important indicator of health. Waist circumference data are derived from the middle shoulder width, the lower edge of rib arch and the upper edge of iliac crest.
