Xu Jianhua has worked in the Cultural Protection Science and Technology Department of the Forbidden City for decades, and participated in the restoration of masterpieces such as Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, You Chuntu and Five Cows with his own skills and painstaking efforts, thus extending Gu Shuhua's life.

There are four steps in the restoration of Gu Shuhua, namely, cleaning the painting heart, uncovering the back paper, re-filling the hole and fine panchromatic painting. Up to now, Xu Jianhua's most vivid work is You Chuntu. You Chuntu is the only work handed down by Zhan Ziqian, a painter in Sui Dynasty. After thousands of years, this world's earliest silk painting has been riddled with holes.

You Chuntu is a landscape painting. If it is not handled properly, it will fade and it is extremely difficult to clean. After thousands of years, the picture scroll has been vulnerable, and a little carelessness will lead to a complete failure.

That was 1977, and Xu Jianhua was an apprentice for three years. As an emissary, he and the famous Su Biao Yang Wenbin jointly undertook the restoration of You Chuntu. Master and apprentice Qi Xin worked together carefully for half a year, and finally brought You Chuntu back to life and reappeared on earth.

Today, Xu Jianhua is the oldest master in the studio. In the eyes of his disciples, "the master's works can be exempted from inspection." However, Xu Jianhua has always been strict with himself, constantly learning new technologies and trying new methods. Xu Jianhua said: "This is a process of constant pursuit of perfection. Only when you have requirements for yourself can you be as good as possible. "

In 20 15, the Palace Museum exhibited 283 precious paintings and calligraphy collections, such as The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, which was very popular in Beijing for a time, and there were endless queues of tourists every day.

Such a scene made Xu Jianhua feel quite gratified. He said, "If the old man sees it, he will be very happy." The "old gentleman" in his mouth is the famous "Su Biao" Yang Wenbin who personally presided over the restoration of The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival.

As early as 1974, Xu Jianhua was demobilized as a soldier and assigned to the restoration factory of the Palace Museum. Because he could understand Wuxi dialect, he was assigned to Yang Wenbin as an apprentice, just in time for the restoration of The Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival.

"When you are an apprentice, you have to be careful everywhere. Talk to the master and look at him. Only by learning the main points and tricks can we truly gain a foothold. " As an apprentice, "Xiao Xu" goes to the studio early every day to fetch water, light a stove, pull coal, sharpen the master's knife, prepare paper ... and do anything. When the master was making the big red paint mounting box, he stood by and never left.

After more than a year, the once-riddled Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival has been revived. After the repair work was successfully completed, the "old gentleman" changed his serious expression and showed a little smile.

The most important thing Xu Jianhua learned from this "old gentleman" is his "attitude" towards his career: dedication and carefulness.

According to the rules of this line, in the first year, I supported Zi Ling as a hairpin, in the second year, as a vertical shaft, and in the third year, as an apprentice for three years. But Xu Jianhua said frankly: "It takes at least ten years to really master this craft." If you want to learn this business well, you need to be able to withstand loneliness.

"My apprentice Gao Xiang saw this painting in Wuyingtang last year," Xu Jianhua said, pointing to two of the photos. In 20 15, when Wuyingtang exhibited "Plum Blossom Banana Leaf Axis", Gao Xiang looked at it several times from top to bottom, but he didn't see anything missing.

Five years ago, Xu Jianhua officially retired. There are many apprentices and few masters in the studio, but he still takes the bus to the Forbidden City to "go to work" every day. After several decades, Xu Jianhua has changed from a "little apprentice" to an "old master".

In the industry, he is regarded as a "national treasure" expert. With the installation and restoration of the Forbidden City in Gu Shuhua listed as a national intangible cultural heritage, Xu Jianhua was also named as the representative inheritor of the project at the end of 20 12.
