Urumqi, commonly known as Urumqi, formerly known as Dihua, is the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the political, economic, cultural, scientific, technological, educational and transportation center of Xinjiang. As of 20 19, there are 7 districts 1 county in the city, with a total area of 13800 square kilometers. According to the data of the seventh census, as of 0: 00 1 1 on June 2020, the permanent population of Urumqi was 4,054,369. "Urumqi" is Mongolian, meaning "beautiful pasture".
Urumqi is located in the northwest of China, in the hinterland of Eurasia, and adjacent to Central Asian countries. It has the title of "Asia Capital" and has been an important hub for communication between the East and the West since ancient times. Today, it is the largest city (2,500 kilometers) which is the most inland and farthest from the sea and coastline in the world, and it is also the second largest city in Central Asia after Almaty in the world.
Urumqi has Xinjiang Branch of China Academy of Sciences, Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xinjiang Institute of Physical and Chemical Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xinjiang Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences and other scientific research institutions. At the end of 20 19, there were 80 key laboratories of all kinds, including national 1 laboratory, 43 at the autonomous region level and 27 at the municipal level. There are 76 approved engineering technology research centers, including 3 national, 26 autonomous and 47 municipal.
