Gucheng Lake was named after the Spring and Autumn Period. At that time, countries competed for hegemony and wars continued. Gaochun is a military stronghold in the land of "Wu Tou Chu Wei". In the seventh year of King Wu's sacrifice (54 BC1), in order to expand his military strength, the State of Wu built cities that could be attacked and retreated in the throat of Beishan, Nanxiu Mountain and Xilaishui. The circumference of the city is 7 miles with 330 steps (360 steps was one mile in ancient times), and the wall height is 1.5 feet. Because of its solid architecture, it is called Gucheng and set as Laizhu City.
Extended data:
"misty rain in Gucheng" has always been a scenic spot in Gaochun, attracting literati and poets of all ages to praise it. Cui Zhiyuan, a famous scholar and poet in Silla (now South Korea) in the Tang Dynasty, made a special trip here and stayed at Zhaoxian Post Office by the lake, while Fan Chengda, a famous poet in the Southern Song Dynasty, also went boating in this lake, leaving many poems.
Gucheng Lake is also the source of Sugagawa, the first artificial canal in the world. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, Wu Chu fought against each other. Wu Zixu, the general of the State of Wu, dug this canal to transport grain and soldiers, starting from Gaochun, passing Liyang, Yixing and Wuxi to Suzhou, and finally pouring into Taihu Lake.
