Nitrifying bacteria can use nh3 as nitrogen source, so they are autotrophs. Why is it wrong?
Autotrophic organisms live and reproduce by inorganic nutrition. The core criterion of autotrophs is whether the energy source of organisms is self-synthetic. NH3 as nitrogen source can not judge whether an organism belongs to autotrophs (rhizobia can also use N2 as nitrogen source), unless the organism is oxidized by NH3 as a source of chemical energy in vivo.
