A-mei's tutor and teacher is Tom Zhang, who made A-mei famous after winning the singing contest. Many classic songs and concerts in early A-mei were written and prepared by Tom Zhang himself. May's first song was "The One Who Loves Me Most" sung with Zhang. Tom Zhang died in a car accident in 1998. A-mei specially composed and sang the song "Listen to You, Listen to Me" for Brother Bao.

Up to now, A-mei often invites Zhang Dongjian's parents to watch her concerts, and she often sings Zhang Dongjian's classic "My future is not a dream" at concerts.
