I. Overview of English (Normal) Major

1995 Heilongjiang Provincial Education Commission approved Mudanjiang Teachers College as an undergraduate majoring in English, and 1996 officially enrolled students. The former Foreign Language Teaching and Research Section has trained 10 English junior college students from 1985. Up to now, there have been ten graduates of English major, with more than 2000 graduates. At present, there are 2932 English majors and 45 teachers. There are basic teaching and research sections and professional teaching and research sections, which undertake the teaching tasks of English major and English education major in primary schools respectively. Over the past few years, we have seized the great opportunity of college enrollment expansion, developed rapidly, and constantly strengthened the construction of teaching, scientific research, student groups and party building, forming a good style of "unity, professionalism, realism and innovation" and making contributions to the development and construction of the college. He has been awarded the titles of advanced party organizations in provincial and municipal institutes and advanced collective of student work in Heilongjiang Province for many times.

Since its establishment, this major has always adhered to the direction of English language and literature, and formulated a syllabus that conforms to the professional construction plan and foreign language teaching rules. Adhere to the planning and construction goals in terms of curriculum, teaching resources, student training objectives and specifications, and textbook selection. The traditional courses of this major, such as basic English, English extensive reading, English listening, oral English, English grammar, English-Chinese translation theory and practice, English linguistics, English literature history and selected readings, American literature history and selected readings, general situation of Britain and the United States, comparison of Chinese and English cultural customs, are now very mature and have formed their own traditions. In 2007, English education major was rated as a provincial key major, Basic English II was rated as a provincial excellent course, and in 2009, it was rated as a provincial talent training model innovation experimental area. Teachers of all majors are working hard to get a master's degree in English language and literature in the near future.

1, discipline construction

This year, the subject of English language and literature has been carefully cultivated. First, English literature; English linguistics and applied linguistics; The advantage of American educational research is multidisciplinary integration and matching with disciplines. Professor Liang Zhongxian and Dr. Liang Zhongxian, the academic leaders, not only have great influence at home and abroad, but also strengthen the discipline construction and drive a number of excellent academic teams, which are expected to successfully obtain master's degrees in foreign languages and literature in recent years.

2. Teaching staff

At present, this major has a good faculty. The age, education background, degree, education background, professional title and professional direction of full-time teachers are reasonably distributed, and the development trend is good. In terms of age distribution, among full-time teachers, young and middle-aged teachers account for the vast majority of all full-time teachers and gradually become the backbone. From the academic level, 18 of the 45 full-time teachers have master's degree or above. According to the distribution of academic background, 80% of teachers have obtained degrees from other institutions. From the distribution of professional titles, teachers with senior professional titles account for 13% of the total number of teachers, and teachers with intermediate professional titles account for 57%. From the professional perspective, most full-time teachers have a master's degree in linguistics or literature, and some teachers have degrees or advanced experience in related fields.

We explore educational ideas through various channels, change teachers' educational ideas, improve teachers' enthusiasm for learning educational theories, and improve their comprehensive quality and professional level.

First, on-the-job training for teachers. This is the main way to improve the comprehensive quality of teachers, that is, teachers constantly explore experience in practice and increase their talents. Pre-service training is given to new teachers every year, and they are given learning guidance and trial training on the history and rules and regulations of the department, so that young teachers can enter the teaching state as soon as possible. Every young teacher should undertake the work of teaching secretary, counselor and head teacher for one year to improve the teaching management ability. Provide tutors for young teachers and implement the "one-on-one" system, so that the professional quality of young teachers can be continuously improved under the training of old teachers.

The second is to carry out the activity of "being a teacher that students like". This activity can improve the relationship between teachers and students, make young teachers pay more attention to students' learning situation and mental health, and make the relationship between teachers and students more harmonious. Organize regular classroom teaching feedback, understand the teaching situation and teaching quality of young teachers, and put forward constructive opinions and suggestions to teachers in time to improve their teaching level as soon as possible.

Third, actively encourage teachers to get master's and doctoral students. The awareness of lifelong learning has been established in the whole department. While completing a large number of teaching tasks, teachers study hard and improve their own quality. Send teachers out to participate in high-level academic conferences and related seminars, broaden their thinking, increase their knowledge, and actively recommend scientific research results to relevant publications and publishing houses. The department uses self-raised funds to encourage teachers to publish articles in high-level journals, and at the same time seeks funds from the college to give teachers more support in scientific research.

The fifth is to send key teachers to participate in foreign language conferences at home and abroad or national professional training. By participating in various forms of meetings and training, they can broaden their knowledge horizons. Every year, more than 65,438+00 teachers are sent to universities at home and abroad for further study or hold academic conferences. Among them, Professor Liang Zhongxian has visited Australia many times. Professor Liao Chunhong was sent to the University of Edinburgh in the UK and the University of Technology Sydney in Australia for training.

The sixth is to hire well-known experts and scholars to teach in this department. In order to promote teachers' knowledge updating, we hired more than 20 experts at home and abroad and held more than 30 academic reports. In conjunction with the School of Western Languages of Heilongjiang University, American experts come to our school to give lectures and give guidance every year.

3. Curriculum construction

In 2007, Basic English II, the main course of this major, was rated as a provincial-level excellent course, which further promoted the curriculum construction and professional development. The host is Professor Liang Zhongxian, Ph.D..

In the past three years, in order to further implement the requirements of the national syllabus for English majors, this major has adjusted some courses, highlighted the status of the main courses, ensured the full class hours of basic courses, ensured the comprehensive opening of professional courses, and attached importance to the teaching of English language and literature professional knowledge, aiming at helping students lay a solid foundation in language and broaden their horizons.

Pay attention to the revision of "Talent Training Program" and optimize the curriculum system. Continue to seriously revise the talent training programs in 2005, 2006 and 2007 according to the requirements of the credit system. The guiding ideology of the revision is to make the new talent training goal realize the mutual coordination and unity of knowledge, ability and quality, and fully reflect the latest characteristics of English. In the course setting, it fully embodies the characteristics of increasing course capacity and knowledge content with more class hours and less class hours; In the module design, on the basis of fully reflecting the professional direction, elective courses are added, and the elective courses in senior grades reflect diversified subject group courses. In the subject design, English language and literature are the main subjects, and interdisciplinary is emphasized to serve the cultivation of compound talents. In teaching content, we should attach importance to teachers, strengthen students' basic teaching skills, attach importance to students' process learning, constantly update teaching methods and improve students' learning skills. Reform is carried out in the form of course examination, some courses are set as examination trees, the total number of final examination subjects is reduced, and oral examination is added to the basic course examination to strengthen the effect of students' oral learning. While strengthening specialty construction, according to the requirements of the Ministry of Education for college foreign language reform, we began to reform college English from grade 2005. Making full use of network resources, the English teaching mode, teaching methods and evaluation methods have been reformed. Adhere to the principles of graded teaching, classified guidance and target management in teaching. In the teaching content and methods, the student-oriented idea is more clearly reflected, and efforts are made to create a good independent learning environment for students that reflects individual differences and is rich in content.

4. Teaching material construction

The forerunner of curriculum construction is teaching material construction, so we have always attached importance to the teaching material construction of this major. In recent years, this major attaches great importance to the construction of teaching materials, and defines the tasks, principles, measures and procedures of teaching material construction. The college has established a scientific management method for textbook selection, and defined the basic principles of textbook selection and the specific procedures for textbook selection and evaluation. In the selection of teaching materials, teachers are encouraged to use textbooks oriented to the 2 1 century, national key construction textbooks in the ninth and tenth five-year plans, excellent original foreign textbooks and new textbooks published in recent three years. The selected textbooks are advanced in content, and they are all award-winning textbooks or textbooks designated by universities. The allocation rate of compulsory textbooks = 100%, and the allocation rate of elective textbooks exceeds 80%. For example, Contemporary College English published by Beijing Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press and Comprehensive Course published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press were selected as basic English courses. The English extensive reading course uses the original textbooks "College English Oral Creativity" and "College English Creative Reading" published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. In the course of Basic English, the use of textbooks has been reformed, and two sets of textbooks have been adopted at the same time. One is to study under the guidance of teachers in class, and the other is to teach students by themselves after class. Both sets of textbooks are tested during the examination, which embodies the principles of speaking, practicing, testing and measuring. Third, boldly use high-quality self-made teaching materials in elective courses, such as General Situation of Britain and America, Selected Reading of British and American Literature History and Works, Appreciation of British and American Short Stories, etc. In order to adapt to the changes in the level of learning sources after the expansion of undergraduate enrollment, we have updated basic English, English audio-visual speaking, English writing, general situation of Britain and the United States and other textbooks in recent five years.

5. Scientific research achievements

This major attaches great importance to the cultivation of students' language ability and encourages students to participate in various scientific research activities and English competitions. Due to the excellent quality of graduates, they have been widely praised by employers such as Harbin No.1 Middle School and Yanshan University Qinhuangdao Branch, which has driven many universities to compete for English majors in our department. The employment rate of the last four graduates reached more than 90%, of which 80% were employed in high schools and junior high schools in the province, some in county-level cities in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and some in junior high schools and primary schools in central cities like Shanghai. The graduates recognized the teaching work of my major, and they unanimously reflected: First, they laid a solid foundation in the basic stage, students have excellent basic skills, pure and authentic pronunciation and intonation, and have great potential for future development; Second, the quality of students as teachers is high, even better than some key universities.

Third, the characteristics of English majors

1, characteristics and advantages of educational reform:

(1) In view of the complicated situation of students after the expansion of higher education, English majors have implemented hierarchical teaching reform, adopting different teaching contents and methods for students at different levels, and truly implementing the teaching concept of "teaching students in accordance with their aptitude".

(2) After the freshmen enter school every year, a "Phonetic Research Month" is held to correct students' pronunciation and solve students' pronunciation and intonation problems;

(3) Compiling the complete set of examination questions of foreign language courses, determining the examination questions of each course, increasing the proportion of subjective questions, and solving the standard problems of testing students' ability and teachers' evaluation of students; The determination of test questions directly affects the reform of teachers' teaching content and teaching methods.

(4) Formulating and issuing the Notice of the Department of Foreign Languages on Reforming the Examination Form of Basic Foreign Language Courses, reforming the credits of basic English courses and implementing structural credits. 2. Training of teachers' characteristic talents: learning skills and professional second classroom activities.

The characteristic of English education major is that students have excellent teaching ability in the future and can be competent for the work of middle school teachers, so we pay attention to the cultivation of teaching skills when students enter school. First of all, train English pronunciation and intonation, focusing on students reading and reciting texts; Second, under the guidance of professional teachers, hold oral English, oral English, reading and listening competitions, award first, second and third prizes, and encourage and recommend students to participate in oral English competitions at or above the provincial level. 3, strengthen the construction of rules and regulations:

(1) The management system of this major is sound, which determines the central position of teaching. More than a dozen rules and regulations, such as Regulations on the Management of Teachers, Regulations on the Management of Teaching Work, and Measures for Rewarding Scientific Research Achievements, have been formulated successively, which put forward clear requirements for the construction of teaching style and study style, ensured teachers' energy input in teaching, and made daily teaching work scientific, standardized and orderly.

(2) Interim Measures for Quantitative Assessment of Teaching Management Performance of Foreign Languages Department was issued. It is to quantify the teaching links of teachers into a certain score, and implement unified performance and pay according to work. This system greatly mobilized the enthusiasm of teachers. The director of the teaching and research section keeps track of teachers' teaching work, puts forward different assessment objectives for teachers with different titles, and standardizes the teaching management of English majors.

(3) We also implemented the practice of transferring the teaching management right to the teaching and research section. In recent years, the scale of foreign languages department has been expanding, and it is far from enough to rely solely on the director or teaching director to manage it. We mobilized the director of the teaching and research section to participate in the teaching inspection at the beginning, middle and end of the semester. After training, they have been able to work independently and solve some specific problems, such as four-level counseling, students' professional competitions, extracurricular activities and so on. (4) In order to strengthen students' learning autonomy and change students' exam-oriented learning into process learning, the Foreign Languages Department has reformed the basic course examination, and included the oral test results in the total credit examination as reciting classic articles. In this way, students will continue to practice oral English, and change the final exam into a process exam, which has achieved remarkable results. In order to make the examination more scientific and systematic, we selected 18 classic reciting articles, edited them into volumes, and made them into tapes to distribute to students. In order to standardize the examination form and content, we have compiled the Encyclopedia of Examination Questions of Foreign Language Courses, which has detailed provisions for all foreign language specialized courses, and will be implemented as a guiding document for foreign language departments in the future.

(5) In order to help counselors do a better job in students' work and improve students' academic performance more effectively, the English Education Department began to implement the student management tutorial system and tutorial system in June 2007. The main method is to equip junior students with counselors and students step by step to help counselors strengthen the overall management of students and make teaching and educating people coordinated and unified.
