How strong is the base required for asphalt pavement construction?
The construction of asphalt pavement requires that the strength of base course should not be less than 7.5kN. If the maximum particle size of aggregate is equal to or greater than 3 1.5mm, the stability should not be less than 15kN.

The strength of asphalt mixture is mainly manifested in two aspects:

One is the cohesive force of the binder formed by asphalt and mineral powder;

The other is the internal friction and locking force between aggregate particles. The huge surface area of fine mineral powder particles (mostly less than 0.074 mm) makes asphalt materials form films, thus improving the bonding strength and temperature stability of asphalt materials; The locking force is mainly generated between coarse aggregate particles.

Extended data

Technical Specification for Construction of Highway Pavement Base (JTJ034-2000) stipulates: 3.6.4 Asphalt emulsion can be used for maintenance of the base. The dosage of asphalt emulsion should be 0.8~ 1.0kg/m2 (referring to the dosage of asphalt), and sprayed twice.

Spray slow-cracking asphalt emulsion with asphalt content of about 35% for the first time, so that it can slightly penetrate into the surface layer of the base. Spray asphalt emulsion with higher concentration for the second time. If it is impossible to avoid the passage of construction vehicles on the maintenance layer, 3~8mm small broken (gravel) stones should be laid after emulsion splitting to make the lower seal.
