Extended data:

The root of the nine-character mantra "Anyone who fights with soldiers is ahead" comes from the secret spell of Taoism in China. It was first seen in the Taoist work Bao Puzi by Ge Hong, a great statesman in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Bao Puzi is divided into two parts: the inside and the outside. The inner part mainly introduces Taoist alchemy, forbidden art and health preservation, while the outer part is related to military strategy and political theory.

Among them, the forbidden art is also called "forbidden law", and Taoism believes that ghosts and poisonous insects and beasts can be suppressed. The forbidden art cover originated from the early Qi Shu and Fu Shu, which only appeared at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty. It can be divided into two categories: Ban Qi and Curse Class. It involves a variety of contents, from begging for rain, avoiding insects and disasters to asking ghosts to send gods.

Nine-character mantra is a powerful Taoist spell. In "Bao Puzi", it is introduced like this: "Those who get cold feet are all in line, and they should always be omnipotent." This means that by reciting these nine words, all evil can be carved from the roots. Moreover, Ge Hong also said in "Bao Puzi": "When you enter the mountain, you should know the six commandments. The spells are: pro, soldier, fight, zhe, quan, array, front and line. These nine words are often regarded as secret spells and everything is done. "

The so-called "Liu Jia" refers to the God of Heaven and Earth in the Taoist world outlook, and together with "Liu Ding", it is called "Liu Ding, Liu Jia". The Taoist theoretical work "The Secret Method of Lingbao Liu Ding" says that calling the name of Liu Jia Liu Ding can "make the family clean and auspicious, the disaster of the five poisons is not far away, and seek longevity, official luck and prosperous future generations". Therefore, the nine-character mantra of Taoism is to summon the gods of six women and six men and protect themselves with the mantra, which is why Ge attaches so much importance to this mantra. Since then, this spell has been secretly circulated in Taoist practice.

During the Xuanzong period of the Tang Dynasty, three Indian tantric masters, Sumitomo Buddha, King Kong Zhi and Sanzang Bukong, came to China and passed on their tantric teachings. Tantric Buddhism pays attention to the cultivation of chanting, which is very similar to Taoism, so the theory of Tantric Buddhism and Taoism began to be deeply integrated. According to Professor Huang Xinchuan's analysis of 70 Buddhist scriptures influenced by Taoism collected by the Tantric Department of Dazhengzang (18-2 1), this paper summarizes the high integration of Tantric Buddhism and Taoism in Han Dynasty, and finds that:

(1) The esoteric religion absorbed the thoughts and beliefs before Taoism, such as the theory of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements, the theory of viscera, divination, magic, Liu Jia, witchcraft, ghosts and gods, and so on.

(2) In the process of communication, Tao and Mi absorbed and integrated each other's teaching, etiquette, incantation and printing methods, and adopted each other's terms, sentences and spells.

(3) Tao and Mi have absorbed each other's thoughts and contents, and even their names are similar.

Therefore, the nine-character mantra of Taoism has also been absorbed by Tantric Buddhism and has become the secret mantra of Tantric Buddhism. Moreover, when reciting the tantric mantra, it is important that the mantra should start with the handprint, so as to maximize the energy of the tantric mantra. The so-called "handprint" is simply the practice of crossing two hands and ten fingers to form different shapes, combined with imagination.

Tantric theory holds that hands and fingers are connected with Buddha nature and internal organs in Buddhism. Therefore, when practicing tantric Buddhism, the formation of "handprints" can inspire each other with the buddhas and bodhisattvas who have already achieved in Buddhism, and increase the cultivation effect, just like gaining the divine power of Buddha.

There are thousands of tantric handprints, each of which has a special meaning and function, such as auspicious seal, King Kong Dahui seal, big wheel altar seal, extinct magic seal, treasure crown and treasure seal, fireworks seal, binding thought and other immortal seals, quasi-nine-headed dragon seal and so on. So the nine-character mantra also has a set of handprints that match the spell.
