Shihezi University is located in Shihezi City, which is known as the Gobi Pearl at the northern foot of Tianshan Mountain in Xinjiang. 1April, 1996, Shihezi Agricultural College, Shihezi Medical College, Corps Normal College and Corps Economic College under the Ministry of Agriculture were merged. It is a national "2 1 1 project" key construction university and a national western key construction university, which is now jointly established by the Ministry of Education and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. The Ministry of Education designated Peking University and East China University of Science and Technology to support Shihezi University, Zhejiang University, Tianjin University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Northwest A&F University, Jiangnan University, and Sichuan Agricultural University to implement the counterpart aid discipline construction plan.

Shihezi University has a history of 60 years. The earliest predecessor of the former Shihezi Medical College was born in the March of China People's Liberation Army to liberate Xinjiang in September 1949.
