Since the new century, the Department of Physical Education has made remarkable achievements in sports science research, and has successively presided over and participated in more than 30 fund projects such as the Ministry of Education, the State General Administration of Sports, the China Sports Science Association, Fujian Social Sciences, and Xiamen University Social Sciences. Published three or four hundred academic papers, five monographs, one patent 1 piece and four textbooks1volume in the first and second core journals. Won many provincial and ministerial achievement awards from the Ministry of Education, Sports Science Conference, State Sports General Administration, Fujian Social Science Association and Xiamen Social Science Association. At the same time, we have also increased international and regional academic exchange activities. Teachers of this department have been invited to the United States, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan Province Province, Hongkong and other countries and regions for academic exchanges and visits for more than 20 times. Students from nearly 30 countries have studied traditional national sports such as Wushu, Qigong and Guidance in our department. This not only promoted international academic exchanges, but also established friendship between countries and regions.

While attaching importance to the teaching of physical education class, the Department of Physical Education pays great attention to the construction of sports teams and the development of mass sports. At present, there are five sports and six sports teams in track and field, swimming, basketball, football and martial arts. Plus cheerleading, dragon and lion dance teams, eight sports teams insist on training all the year round, ranking among the best in many national, provincial and municipal sports competitions. There are more than 20 student sports associations in the school, which hold various activities and competitions all the year round, expanding their influence and achieving excellent results. Xiamen University Men's Basketball Team is also known as the overlord of the Super League in the south. Struggled hard in the 2007-2008 Chinese University Super League and won the brilliant results of the second place in the national finals.
