Brief Introduction to the Author of Health Essays
Cao Tingdong, a native of Jiashan, Zhejiang Province, was born in 1698- Qing Dynasty. Years, at the age of 90. Cao Shi's works are quite rich and unique. His six great works, such as Yi Zhun, Xiao Jing Tong Shi, are mostly collected in Siku Quanshu. There are five volumes of health monographs, namely "Lao Heng Yan" (also known as "Health Essays"), which are simple in content and easy to implement. In addition to advocating emotional harmony, nourishing the heart and nature, being cautious in daily life, keeping warm and cold, Yujia also attaches importance to diet and regulating the spleen and stomach.

He believes that the spleen and stomach are injured by improper diet, and points out that "the spleen and stomach are the foundation of the day after tomorrow, and it is more important to regulate the spleen and stomach in later years." It is also believed that "the weakness of stomach yang leads to all diseases, and the insufficiency of spleen yin leads to all evils." Therefore, controlling diet and regulating the spleen and stomach will help the normal digestion and transfer of diet, subtly ensure the nutrition of all parts of the human body, and lead to health and longevity.

Cao Tingdong agreed with Hua Tuo's argument in On Grain that food must be digested and absorbed before it can be nourished. The so-called three transformations: one is cremation (must be boiled), the other is oral (must be chewed carefully), and the third is ventralization (must be digested automatically by the spleen and stomach). It is emphasized that "cremation is the only way for the elderly", because the teeth of the elderly often fall off, the oral motility is reduced, the function of the spleen and stomach is gradually weakened, and the abdominal force is reduced, so most of them rely on cremation to cook and steam, which is conducive to killing and absorbing more nutrients.
