Nanjing University is a comprehensive national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC). It ranks among the world-class universities (Class A), "2 1 1 Project" and "985 Project". It is the Nine Major Alliances, China University Presidents Association, Pacific Rim University Alliance, 2 1 Century Academic Alliance, International Applied Science and Technology Development Cooperation Network, and East Asian Studies.
Nanjing University can be traced back to Nanjing Imperial College in 258 AD. The modern history of Nanjing University began with Sanjiang Normal School founded by 1902. Later, it was renamed Nanjing University on 1950 after the historical periods of Liangjiang Normal University, Nanjing Higher Normal University, National Southeast University, National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, National Central University and National Nanjing University.
