Xichang City is located in the southwest of Sichuan Province, in the hinterland of Anning River Plain, the second largest plain in Sichuan Province. It is the capital of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, the largest Yi inhabited area in China, and also the political, economic, cultural and transportation center of Panxi area.
