School work situation
When I was studying at Rice University, there were two forms of campus work, one was called federal work study, and the other was called Rice work. There is a big difference between the two: federal word learning is not aimed at international students, but only at students who have obtained permanent residency in the United States; There are almost no restrictions on rice work, and every student at school can apply.
Introduction to rice work
Rice work is provided by various colleges or departments of the school, and students do not need to provide financial proof or complete financial aid procedures. The application procedure is simple and quick. Once you find a job in the school, you need to submit SPAF, I-9 form, W-4 form, direct deposit authorization form and other related forms to the dean of the college. The most important of these forms is the I-9 form. You can't start work until the form is completed. Even if you have already worked, you can't get paid. For more information about the I-9 form, please click here to view it.
The job opportunities provided by rice work have many benefits for students. While gaining work experience and earning tuition or living expenses, you can also learn how to communicate and cooperate with employers and colleagues, which is a valuable asset for the future society.
According to American law, students can do all kinds of campus work, but the total time per week should not exceed 20 hours. Most of the jobs provided by rice workers limit the working hours to about 10 to 15 hours per week, leaving students more time to study, but in summer vacation or other school holidays, the working hours per week can exceed 20 hours. At the same time, the meter worker stipulates that every four hours of work, you can rest for fifteen minutes; If you work more than six hours, you can eat for half an hour for free.
Types of jobs in rice processing
There are many job opportunities at Rice University, which can be roughly divided into:
First of all, organizing work for students, such as Willie Bar, The Hoot or Coffee House, often enrolls students in schools. The working atmosphere here is as harmonious as a small club, and your work experience will make you feel very happy. There are also some job opportunities in libraries, student dormitories and fitness rooms, some of which are relatively relaxed. For example, a job opportunity provided by a library can earn a salary of $8.50 per hour just by checking equipment and providing technical help to solve some computer problems, which is still considerable.
Second, work for the school department, such as TA (teaching assistant), but freshmen generally can't apply, because it's not as simple as correcting homework, and they need to do some research to assist or guide students. RA (Research Assistant) has a complicated job. Usually, you need to assist professors to do many kinds of work, but you can get better exercise in your own knowledge field.
Qualifications for international student work
For the students of F 1, it is not necessary to get permission in advance to work on campus, but the students who work must maintain their full-time student status, otherwise it is illegal to work. For J 1 students, they should make an appointment with OISS to handle related matters before starting work, and they can start work only after obtaining OISS permission.
In addition, the recruitment department will generally put forward some requirements, such as candidates should have good communication skills, have relevant skills, and be able to keep industry secrets.
Off-campus work
Usually, only students who have obtained the federal work-study program qualification can take part in off-campus work, while international students do not have this right. There are two kinds of off-campus jobs that ordinary international students can engage in: CPT (in-class training) and OPT (optional training). Here is a brief introduction:
1, course practice CPT
Usually, a course in a school requires students to complete CPT for several months to get credits, so CPT can also be said to be something that every student must experience. When applying for CPT, you should first find a job related to your major, ask your tutor for permission, and then apply for permission from the school. The longest internship period can't exceed 12 months, and you can't change your company at will during this period.
2. Choice of graduation practice
OPT's work must also be related to the major studied, and students are only allowed to apply shortly after graduation or after graduation, and they can apply for OPT internships at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The longest period cannot exceed 12 months. If you find OPT after graduation, you can legally extend your stay in the United States. Many students use this time to look for job opportunities while practicing. Once they find a suitable job, they can change their student visas into work visas.
Matters needing attention in work
Students should pay attention to work etiquette at work, for example, pay attention to their own behavior at work, don't chat with colleagues, try not to answer the phone, and don't let friends visit. If you are injured at work, even if it is very minor, you should report it to the supervisor in time. Don't take it silently to show that you don't haggle over every ounce. Responsibility should be clearly divided.
