Why is there a shield dance in Yongxin?
It originated from the shield tactics in the ancient army. According to legend, the famous anti-Japanese scholar Qi Jiguang in the Ming Dynasty, Ji Xiaoxin's Book, should be its source. As for when it was introduced into Jiangxi, it is still inconclusive. There is a saying that was introduced when the residents of the Yellow River Basin moved southward on a large scale in the Qin Dynasty. There is also a saying that this dance comes from the "group dance" created by the famous Huang Gai during the Three Kingdoms period; Some people think that the shield dance originated in the Qing Dynasty. After the failure of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement, some Taiping Heavenly Kingdom soldiers who fled here devoted themselves to training and resisted tenaciously. Later, some local martial arts people refined it and gradually evolved into a folk dance with both ornamental value and fitness and entertainment.

After the founding of New China, Yongxin County re-excavated and reorganized the shield dance, eliminated some feudal superstitions in previous programs, and incorporated many modern performance forms to continue to carry forward. 1975, at the first folk art performance in Jiangxi Province, more than a dozen folk artists from Nantang Village performed "Shield Dance". In the same year, he went to Beijing to participate in the national folk music and dance performance, and won the excellent program award and performance award in the national performance and Zhongnanhai performance; After the winter shield dance was processed in Beijing in the same year, it went abroad with the former Northeast Military Region Song and Dance Troupe and performed in the former Soviet Union, North Korea and other countries. 1984 was selected as one of the highlights of national folk dance by jtv and put on the screen. Subsequently, Shanghai Science and Technology Film Studio selected it twice, and the Central News Film Studio and Zhujiang Film Studio put it on the screen and publicized it widely to the society. As a unique folk art, shield dance was quickly welcomed by the people. Now it has become an excellent form of fitness and entertainment for farmers in Yongxin and even Jinggangshan, Taihe and surrounding counties and cities, and has become a "reserved program" to celebrate rural marriage and children's education. In recent years, Yongxin County has invested a lot of manpower, material resources and financial resources, set up special seminars, trained professional teams, carried out a series of activities, and made every effort to excavate and organize the shield dance. In 2005, the brand-new Yongxin Shield Dance participated in the street performance of Nanchang International Nuo Culture and Art Festival and the performance of Jiangxi Folk Art Festival, and as the only folk art program selected in Jiangxi Province, it went to Shanwei City, Guangdong Province to participate in the first Pan-Pearl River Delta "9+2" folk art exhibition competition, which received rave reviews. With the rapid development of cultural life and the death of old artists, the shield dance is in danger of being lost, and the rescue work is imminent. The state attaches great importance to the protection of intangible cultural heritage. On May 20th, 2006, Yongxin Shield Dance was approved by the State Council to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
