During the Cultural Revolution, Ruyi's sister Yun Shufen and her brother-in-law Han Feng were both branded as "Ulanhu's best friends", and the living expenses on which the mother and son lived stopped, and their lives fell into embarrassment. When Ruyi was only a teenager, he would complain about the unjust cases of his relatives everywhere. In order to survive, he had to carry photographic equipment on his back, ride a bicycle south across the Yellow River, go to Shiliancheng People's Commune in Ordos Plateau, and take pictures of local farmers village by village to earn money. He won the welcome of farmers with high quality and low price, and served to take pictures at home. Ruyi earned money to support his family, knelt down to serve his mother at that difficult time, and rescued his mother from hunger with his fighting spirit and intelligence. He has a good reputation as a dutiful son among friends and society.
