Sui was losing ground in the world, and Shi Biao led the Wagang army to break, with great momentum. It used to be the most promising force for heroes from all walks of life, but in the end, Shi Mi was defeated and surrendered to the Tang Dynasty, and was killed for trying to rebel against the Tang Dynasty and stand on its own feet. There are many reasons for this situation, so let's briefly talk about it today.
Comparing Shi Mi with Liu Bang and Zhu Yuanzhang, we find that Shi Mi's talent and vision are obviously insufficient.
First, Shi Biao has no ambition and lacks strategy. Shi Mi is a person with a strong family background. He came from a big family, and his great-grandfather Li Mi was once one of the Eight Pillars countries in the Western Wei Dynasty. Grandfather Li Yao was named Xingguo Gong in the Northern Zhou Dynasty. Father Li Kuan was the pillar of the Sui Dynasty. Such a distinguished family background was famous at that time. Shimi was born in such a family, but he is not a fixed driver in the traditional sense. He is not a complacent man. On the contrary, he has lofty aspirations and ideals, and often takes saving the world and helping the people as his own responsibility. But at the beginning of the uprising, Shi Biao just gathered the victims who could not survive to form a military group.
They only robbed the grain carriers and granaries of the Sui Dynasty for the purpose of survival, and did not have many ideals and ambitions. However, after the team has expanded to several hundred thousand, if you want to lead so many people, you must play your own banner clearly and have clear political opinions. Shi Biao didn't refuse to be emperor. As a result, his subordinates lack a unified goal and gradually become a mob chasing interests, which is easy to disintegrate from the inside.
Second, there are many factions within the Wagang Army, and the infighting is serious. The wagang army was extremely complicated from its inception, including outlaws, peasant troops, officers and soldiers, local strongmen and so on. It was divided into several factions, the biggest of which was Zhai Rang and Shi Biao. They finally assassinated Zhai Rang and oppressed Xu Shiqi and Dan Xiong Xin to yield. This kind of open infighting directly led to the panic, division and internal disintegration within the Wagang Army. Shi Biao also bears the reputation of "bite the hand that feeds you", and his appeal is on the decline.
The wagang army's combat effectiveness was greatly reduced, and it was quickly defeated by Wang and immediately collapsed.
Third, Wagangzhai seems to be powerful, but it has no roots. Wagangzhai is located in the hinterland of the Central Plains, which is a typical place of four wars militarily. Li Yuan, Wang, Dou Jiande, Du and others border on Shimi's jurisdiction. At the end of the Sui Dynasty, almost all the powerful factions were directly adjacent to the Wagang faction. If anything goes wrong, they will be eaten by the enemies around them. Crucially, although the Wagang Army led by Shi Biao was huge, it was still rootless in the eyes of the real strength faction at that time.
There is a simple reason. Chang 'an, Luoyang and Shi Mi, two political, economic and military centers in the world, were not occupied. In the eyes of the aristocrats who held most of the social resources at that time, only the occupation of Chang 'an or Luoyang was the master of fate with a solid foundation. It was after winning Chang 'an that Li Yuan won the full support of the entire Guanlong aristocratic group in all aspects, and it was also after Ai Jiang occupied Luoyang that Wang had the courage to establish the country and claim the emperor.
In contrast, the earthen jar occupied by Shi Biao is next to Luoyang, but it has never been able to capture Luoyang or invade Guanzhong to the west. It seems that the four sides surrendered, and its essence is the thief who occupied Wagang Village. On the surface, Shi Mi recruited millions of elite soldiers, but because he could not occupy any of Luoyang and Chang 'an, he could not get the support of the nobles in Guanlong and the gentry in Shandong. The most important thing is the support of talents. Although many places were occupied, most of them could only rely on the management of local strongmen and aristocratic families. When he is defeated, these people will immediately turn to others.
To sum up: Shimi seems to be powerful, but it is really false prosperity. After Li Yuan, who was later than him in the uprising, occupied Chang 'an, taking Guanzhong as the base area, his compressive capacity was much stronger than that of Shimi Wagangzhai. To sum up, Shimi lost in talent, strategic vision and reputation.
