Lotus on four sides and willow on three sides, one city with mountains and half a city with lakes are couplets praising Daming Lake in Jinan. The author is Liu, born in Qing Dynasty.
Daming Lake in Jinan, Shandong Province was once named "Lotus Seed Lake" because there were many lotus seeds in the lake during the Six Dynasties. In the ninth year of Jiaqing in Qing Dynasty, Liu, then Governor of Shandong Province, hosted a banquet with Shandong Governor and calligrapher at Xiaocanglang Garden in Daming Lake. Liu immediately wrote a couplet praising Daming Lake: "Lotus flowers on all sides and willow trees on three sides, a city with mountains and half a city with lakes." Tie Bao improvised. This couplet stone carving has been embedded on both sides of the entrance to the west gallery wall of the garden. This couplet has been admired and loved by later generations for hundreds of years and has become a famous couplet sentence describing the style of Jinan ancient city.
