What's the name of a wild chestnut?
This wild chestnut is called Castanopsis eyrei.

Castanopsis eyrei matures gradually after the first frost every year. Like chestnut, the fruit is covered with a layer of thorn balls. When the thorn ball splits, the fruit inside will fall off. But its fruit is much smaller than chestnuts. After all, it is pure wild, and it is normal to have small fruits. Look carefully when looking for fruit. Small fruits are hidden under fallen leaves and bushes, which is really hard to find.

Castanopsis eyrei is a cone plant of FAGACEAE, which is distributed in the south of the Yangtze River in China, but not in Hainan and Yunnan. It grows in hills or mountains or sparse forests or dense forests at an altitude of 300- 1700 meters. It is often the main tree species in evergreen broad-leaved forest or mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest. Sometimes it becomes a small piece of pure forest. Nuts are broadly conical, with a cone tip at the top, width 10- 14 mm, hairless, and the fruit navel is located at the bottom of nuts.

Growing environment:

It grows in hills or mountains or sparse forests or dense forests at an altitude of 300- 1700 meters. It is often the main tree species in evergreen broad-leaved forest or mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest. Sometimes it becomes a small piece of pure forest. It is suitable for growing on fertile and humid acid soil in warm and rainy areas, and can also grow on barren gravel ground with strong adaptability. Children are shade-tolerant, and adults need certain lighting conditions.

Deep roots and strong germination. Natural distribution often forms pure forest or mixed forest with Schima superba, Castanopsis fargesii, Cyclobalanopsis glauca, Quercus acutissima and Alnus cremastogyne.
