Mrs. Yuan, whose date of birth and death is unknown, was born in Ruyang (now Shangshui County, Henan Province), the daughter of Yuan Shu, a warlord at the end of the Han Dynasty, and the concubine of Sun Quan, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty.

Mrs. Yuan's genealogy:

Father: Yuan Shu, one of the warlords in the late Han Dynasty, proclaimed himself emperor in the second year of Jian 'an (197).

Husband: Sun Quan, the founding emperor of Sun Wu.

Brother: Yao Yuan, official to doctor.

Niece: Yuan, concubine of Sun Fen, King of Qi.
