Hongyan is listed as a second-class protected bird in the list of national key protected wild animals in China. Hongyan usually flies to the feeding ground in droves as soon as it gets dark, and returns to the lake or river to rest and swim in the morning, and sometimes rests on the grass or beach on the shore.
In ancient poetry, Hongyan generally refers to the messenger who delivers letters between lovers. It first appeared in the Book of Songs, and later generations often used Hongyan as a metaphor for letters. This is the moral of "Hongyan flies too far, ichthyosaurs dive into the water". .
