First, several necessary tools and software.
●Windows 98 installation source files
●USBOOT
●98Lite
● explorer.exe, notepad.exe, write.exe, comdlg32.dll and shell32.dll files in the Windows95 installation CD are required, and they are all included in the Windows 95 Win95_03.cab compressed package.
The five files in Windows 95 must be consistent with the installed Windows 98 language version. The author uses the simplified Chinese version. In addition, if you want to slim down Windows 98 to the extreme, it is recommended to use the English version of the system, excluding the Chinese language pack. Only this one can "slim down" 10MB capacity.
Second, make a flash disk boot disk.
We use USBOOT as a flash drive boot disk. Insert the flash drive first, and then run the Usboot.exe. A warning window will pop up. Ignore it and click OK.
After that, the program will detect your hard disk and USB flash drive, select USB flash drive, then click "Click here to select working mode" and select "ZIP mode" under it, so that the motherboard will recognize USB flash drive as a ZIP drive, and its USB flash drive letter is A: after startup. If HDD mode is selected, the drive letter of this boot flash drive will be C:, which will cause an error when installing the system.
Now click "Start" and a warning will pop up? Is Penang cold? ? ? For disk backup, click OK until the format progress window appears. After the formatting is completed, the window will prompt "Please reinsert the USB flash drive". Here, we can unplug the flash drive and plug it back in. The program will automatically write the startup file to the U disk, and the U disk startup disk will be made successfully after writing.
Third, lose weight with 98lite.
Step 1: restart the system and insert the prepared flash disk startup disk. When the system enters the self-check interface, press the Del key to enter the BIOS setting, then set the Boot Order to USB-ZIP in the BIOS Function Setting item, and then press the F 10 key to save and exit, and the computer will boot the system from the USB flash drive to enter the DOS mode.
Step 2: Boot the system into DOS with the prepared flash disk startup disk, and run the executive program of 98lite at the command prompt. This 98lite.exe program is located in the Setup folder, and you can see the interface of the program after execution.
Step 3: As you can see from the screen prompt, 98lite needs to create an installation folder, and its default path is D:\98LITE\SETUP\. Press Enter to confirm, or we can customize this installation folder, just click > > and enter the path after the cursor.
Step 4: Next, you need to specify the Windows 98 source files stored in the hard disk. Press Enter and enter the directory of Windows 98 installation files in the screen that appears. For example, I store the installation file in the F:\Win98se folder, so just type d:\win98se here and press Enter.
Step 5: At this time, the program will copy the installation file of Windows 98 to the folder D:\98LITE\SETUP. After the copy is completed, you will enter the next screen. 98Lite will recognize your version of Windows 98, and then press any key (don't press ESC to exit) to proceed to the next step.
Step 6: When the "Choose from the following options" screen appears, you will see that there are four options. Only 1 and 4 items are available, and the fourth item is uninstall. Here, you should select 1 to install Windows 98.
Select the project 1 Install Windows 98.
Step 7: After the above operations are completed, four options will appear in the installation interface, including "1". Sleek "refers to the use of Windows 95 shell, not integrated IE. "2. Xiaopang" means to minimize IE installation, keep the shortcut toolbar, and edit the start menu and startup menu.
Select the project to start.
"3. Overweight" refers to fully integrating IE, and the last "4.98MICRO" refers to removing all components bundled with Windows 98 to the maximum extent. Therefore, we chose to press key 4 to minimize the installation file.
Step 8: Next, the installation introduction about 98MICRO will appear in the installation interface. Press any key to enter the next operation. At this time, the program will ask you whether to use the system file detector of Windows 98. If "y" is selected, files exceeding 10MB will be installed. To minimize installation, you should select "n" here.
Step 9: The "EXTAACT WINDOWS95 EXPLORERFILES" interface now appears, asking you to specify five file locations in the WINDOWS95 system, press enter, and then enter the folder paths where these five files are located in the displayed screen.

Step 10: After entering, these five files will be copied to the D:\98LITE\SETUP folder and forced to be compatible. * * * There are two steps, which will take several minutes. After execution, the installation file will be automatically prepared for the new installation option, which will take several minutes.
Installation process
Step 1 1: When you are ready, the program will prompt you to do a routine test on your system in the next operation. Press Enter to enter the disk test screen of Windows 98. If there is an error, it will be repaired automatically. After the test is completed, press X to exit the test, and then you can see the installation screen of Windows 98.
Start installation
Step 12: Press the "c" key to continue the installation, then in the "Select Directory" window that appears, select the "Other Directory" item, click "Next", set the installation directory to the flash drive directory in the "Change Directory" window, and then click "Next". A warning window will appear, click Yes to continue the installation.
Step 13: Now we want to install Windows 98. When the installation options screen appears, select Customize, then uncheck all components in the component selection window (as shown in Figure 8), so that the installed system will be smaller, and finally complete the operation according to the normal installation method.
Fourth, further slimming after installation.
When using 98Lite to install the system, we see that the size of the installation file is only about 1 100 MB, which is half of the original requirement of 200MB. Now we will further achieve the goal of "slimming" by deleting some unnecessary files.
Step 1: Boot into the system with Windows 98, open the Windows installation directory on the U disk, and delete INF, SYSTEM32, SYSBCKUP and Media folders (including files), which can save about 20MB of capacity.
Step 2: Open the font folder, and then delete all fonts except Songti and mallet, which will save 20MB of space.
Step 3: Delete all input method files in the system folder, which will save 10MB space. These input methods and corresponding files are shown in the following table. In addition, you can delete two compressed package files, MINI. Cab and compact car 1. Color profiles in CAB and color folders.
Step 4: Delete all files (including hidden files) except IO.sys, MSDOS.sys and COMMAND.COM in the directory of drive C, and then find and delete all junk files such as *. hlp，*。 chm，*。 cnt，*。 bmp，*。 Gif，*。 bak，*。 Chk and *. Txt through search.
Step 5: Right-click My Computer on the desktop and click Properties, then click Performance → Virtual Memory in the opened system properties window, and then select User-specified Virtual Memory Settings and Disable Virtual Memory in the opened window. Finally, click OK to restart the system, which will save 10MB.
The device is here. Congratulations, you made it! After the above slimming, you will be surprised to find that Windows 98 on the USB flash drive only takes up less than 50MB of space. After installing Windows 98 system, more than half of the USB flash drives are useless.
