During the Mid-Autumn Festival, hundreds of people joined forces to exorcise demons for the people. In order to show concentricity, they tied the boat and cable to their waist and walked side by side. At night, they hold incense in their hands and enter Hong Kong to exorcise evil spirits. They danced and walked zigzag, looking like a giant centipede crawling vividly, hence the name "centipede dance".
The Geography Folklore of Haikang County in the Republic of China records: "On the Mid-Autumn Festival night ... there are flutes and drums, children marching in procession, people holding fragrant tree ornaments, dragons and lions dancing all over the street and saying' centipede dance', which is also the habit of this farmer."
