The Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in 1955, formerly known as the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the Ministry of Health. 197 1 merged with Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and changed its name to China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. From June 5438 to February 2005, China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine was renamed China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a comprehensive TCM research institution directly under state administration of traditional chinese medicine, which integrates scientific research, medical treatment and teaching, focusing on TCM scientific research. Tu Youyou, a lifelong researcher of the Institute, won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on October 20 15 10 for his outstanding contribution to the discovery of artemisinin and its application in malaria treatment.
