Geological structure of Kongtong Mountain

Kongtong Mountain is the southwest wing of Taitongshan compound anticline. Under the influence of strong tectonic movement, a series of fractures and folds occurred in the strata in the area, especially in Cretaceous, and the derived joints were very developed. The main five groups of joints form an "X" joint combination, which cuts the rock mass into different blocks and forms a steep cliff, laying the foundation for the formation of geological relics.

The structural cracks and joints of Cretaceous sandstone and glutenite in Kongtong Mountain are well developed, and many Danxia landforms such as peak forests and stone pillars are formed under weathering. Due to the different sedimentary environments, parallel bedding with different tones in sandstone and mudstone has become a unique geological relic with high ornamental value: there are many stone pillars in the peak forest of Kongtong Mountain, and the cliffs are steep, which collapsed under the external dynamic geological effects such as precipitation and weathering, and huge rock blocks piled up together to form accumulated geological relics.
