Diary of a Madman is Lu Xun's first vernacular short story. It was published in New Youth magazine, Volume 4, No.5, May 19 18, and later included in Scream.
Through the self-report of a persecuted person, the novel profoundly exposes and criticizes the poison of feudal family system and feudal ethics, vividly shapes the image of a rebel "madman" of feudal ethics, and calls on people to rise up and overthrow the old system of cannibalism. It is the first famous new literary work in the history of modern literature in China.
This novel was published on the eve of the May 4th Movement. As the revolution of 1911 was halfway through, some basic problems of the revolution were not fundamentally solved, but more obvious. The broad masses of peasants are still living a precarious life, and the feudal class is still riding on the people. In particular, the intensification of imperialist aggression has made various social contradictions more complicated and acute. In this situation, Lu Xun expressed his complete resistance to the feudal system and its superstructure with his keen thinking and sharp brushwork. The novel Diary of a Madman is a bombshell for feudal ethics and a sobering agent for the world.
The novel Blessing describes the tragic experience of rural woman Xianglinsao. In the story, Sister Xianglin was widowed when she was young, and her mother-in-law was forced by heavy debts. Encouraged by Wei, she was sold to the mountain hunter He Laoliu as her wife. Sister Xianglin didn't want to remarry, so she fled to Master Lu's house to help her. A few months later, she was discovered by Wei and rushed to the mountains to marry He Laoliu. After marriage, they gave birth to Amao. The family had a good life. However, later, he died of typhoid fever and the child was taken away by the wolf. Sister Xianglin had to go back to Lujia to do housework. Because Sister Xianglin was widowed twice, she was considered unlucky and hated by her master. She is not allowed to touch all the sacrificial vessels and offerings during praying. In extreme mental fear, Sister Xianglin was afraid of suffering after death, so she saved two years' salary and donated the threshold to the Land Temple as a body double to atone for her sin. When she died in the winter solstice, the host still shouted loudly, forbidding Sister Xianglin to touch her hand. From then on, she was driven out by the Lujia family and became a beggar, just like a mouse out of a hole during the day. On New Year's Eve, Sister Xianglin died in the snow with firecrackers.
1946, Lu Xun's novel was adapted into Yue Opera "Xianglinsao", which was performed by a student troupe, written by Nan Wei and starring Yuan Xuefen, and was regarded as a milestone in the reform of Yue Opera in the 1940s. 1956, this novel was adapted into a film by Xia Yan, which received enthusiastic response at home and abroad.

Scream is a collection of short stories written by Lu Xun from 19 18 to 1922. The works truly describe the social life from the Revolution of 1911 to the May 4th Movement, reveal all kinds of deep-seated social contradictions, deeply analyze and completely deny China's old system and stale traditional ideas, and show a strong sense of national survival and a strong desire for social change. This collection of novels was published by Xinchao Publishing House in August 1923. It contains fourteen novels, including Diary of a Madman, Medicine, Tomorrow and so on. There was a great response after publication. In the preface to Scream, Lu Xun talked about the process and purpose of his abandoning medicine and joining literature. 1898 graduated from Nanjing Jiangnan naval academy, and transferred to the mining and metallurgy school affiliated to Jiangnan Lushi academy in the second year. 1902 After graduation, he was sent by the Qing government to study in Japan. 1904 entered Sendai Medical College. 1906 stopped studying medicine and returned to Tokyo to prepare for the literary movement. It was an experience of looking at pictures in class that made him abandon medicine and join literature. He recalled: "On one occasion, I suddenly met many China people I hadn't seen for a long time in a photo. One is tied in the middle, and there are many people standing around, all of whom are physically strong and numb. According to the explanation, it is tied with people who have worked as military detectives for Russia and are about to be beheaded by the Japanese army, surrounded by people who come to enjoy this grand exhibition. "He thinks medicine is not an urgent matter. No matter how healthy and strong the weak citizens are, they can only do meaningless propaganda materials and spectators. There is no need to think that they died unfortunately. Therefore, our primary task is to change their spirit, and what is good at changing their spirit is that I thought it was natural to advocate literature and art at that time, so I wanted to advocate the literary movement. " Lu Xun also talked about how he contributed novels such as Diary of a Madman to New Youth. He once asked a friend who ran New Youth:' If an iron house has absolutely no windows, it is extremely difficult to be destroyed, and there are many people sleeping in it, it will soon suffocate. However, when they went from lethargy to death, they did not feel the sadness of death. Since you are shouting, you have awakened several sober people and made this unfortunate minority suffer irreparable dying pain. Do you think you deserve them? The man replied,' However, since several people have come up, you can't say that there is no hope to destroy this iron house. So he wrote Diary of a Madman, and since then he has published more than ten other articles. Lu Xun hopes that his works can awaken people in the "iron house" and save the people. Talking about the name "Scream", he said:' In my own mind, I thought I was no longer an eager person who couldn't speak, but maybe I still couldn't forget my loneliness and sadness that day, so sometimes I couldn't help shouting to comfort the brave man who was running in loneliness and let him not be afraid of his predecessors. As for whether my cry is brave or sad, hateful or ridiculous, it doesn't matter so much; But since it's up to you to cry, of course, I often don't care to put a wreath at my son's grave with a curved pen, and don't tell her tomorrow that she didn't see her son's dream, because the Lord didn't advocate negativity at that time. As for myself, I don't want to infect young people who are dreaming like I was young. "
