Insomnia and Wang Daochang's "Five-second Sleep" Method
Wang Daochang, a scholar in Changchun, a northern suburb, studied abroad in his early years and gained a lot from doing business in his youth. His wife and daughter are from Taiwan Province, and he has a family and children. After he became a Taoist, he was not only good at keeping in good health and breathing, but also got the demeanor of an ancient scholar in his words and deeds. Changchun Temple is located in the suburbs, which could have gathered the opinions of many people and made Guangda Temple come into being. However, Wang Daochang did not engage in ceremonies or accept apprentices, but only made Changchun Temple an open place. All the people came to sit, make tea and chat, talking nonsense. This is a great pleasure. Whether Wang Daochang looks at it or not, everyone is at home.

Taoist priests are proficient in keeping in good health. Every day, the rooster crows, and after a hundred steps, he is led to take a deep breath. Make tea and play the piano, visit with peers, learn skills and talk about classics. At night, they will definitely read books and sleep when they are a little sleepy. At the age of 50, they look like crows, they look like cranes, and they are only thirty years old.

I have always been friendly with monks and Taoists. After meeting a Taoist by chance, they soon became friends. We often read and study together, and talk about lifestyle and the art of health preservation. One day when talking about insomnia, the Taoist inadvertently mentioned that he could fall asleep in five seconds. I was shocked at first sight, thinking that people who practice are most afraid of talking nonsense. How can you fall asleep in five seconds? Just a few minutes, even a minute or two. Say five seconds to sleep, it is inevitable to exaggerate and grandstanding.

Seeing that I didn't agree, the Taoist priest said unhurriedly, I have a way to practice this, not talk nonsense. Sleeping for five seconds is not a day's work, but as long as you follow my method strictly, it is not too difficult for ordinary people to achieve it.

I said, if Taoist priests have this good method, they might as well elaborate on it, which is a great boon to people who suffer from insomnia all over the world.

The Taoist priest went on to say that my good method sounds mysterious, but it is not difficult. The real difficulty lies in whether it can persist for a long time. There are two ways:

First of all, strictly distinguish between reading, doing things and resting places. The function of a bedroom or bed is just to sleep, and there is no other use. Close your eyes and rest as soon as you go to bed. People who have just entered this road can't fall asleep at once. Try counting 500 to 1000 in your mind, or counting sheep or chanting. 500 is used to calm the heart. Counting to 500, I still can't sleep. Then count, and so on. This method is intended to divert attention or stabilize the mentality by counting.

At the same time, strictly distinguish the work area, rest area and sleeping area at home. Specifically, the study or living room at home is the work area and the rest area, and the bedroom is the sleeping area. The function of each area should not be broken or confused. In other words, if you are not sleepy or don't want to sleep, then, even if you are tired and sleepy again, you should stick to moving on the sofa or other places, or sitting or leaning, and never lie down. Because this method should be carried out at home, the only place to lie down is the bed in the bedroom. This rule cannot be broken. Over time, people will form a habit, and once they enter the bedroom, they will subconsciously want to sleep. The above methods reflect the importance of habits. It is difficult to form a habit at first, but once it is formed, it can produce miraculous effects.

Secondly, we must do the most challenging things when we are in the best state of mind, such as reading classic and difficult books and doing the most important or difficult things. If you know that you are in a bad mental state, take a proper rest or do something minor or relaxing, and never do anything important. If you feel tired from reading and doing things, you should get up and have a proper rest. Or look up, or exercise properly, in short, relax appropriately according to your daily habits. Especially when reading, put down the book every 40 minutes or an hour, take exercise and have a rest.

The Taoist priest said that Confucianism and Taoism are inseparable, and Zeng Guofan said it very well: If the spirit is always more than enough, then the spirit is full and the heart is not loose. In my opinion, there are at least two meanings. One is that people should be full of energy when reading and doing things. As the saying goes, that's what it means to save your strength. At the best time, do the most challenging and important things without interference. After forming this habit, not only the efficiency of reading and doing things will be improved, but also the understanding will be improved with the help of God when the spirit is good, and a virtuous circle will be formed over time. People will have more opportunities to have a good state and get twice the result with half the effort when reading and doing things.

The second meaning of "more than enough" means that you can't do everything best, so leave room. A master of reading and doing things often has great strength and only uses seven or eight points, and knows enough is enough. In this case, for example, there are martial arts fans reading martial arts novels, and there are game fans playing computer games, often forgetting to eat and sleep, day and night. I tried my best to make myself dizzy, but I still refused to stop. As a result, it is conceivable that not only the body is getting weaker and weaker, but also the spirit is more unsustainable. Extreme examples are often seen in the news, such as the sudden death of teenagers addicted to playing games. The key to this method is self-control. A person with strong self-control knows how to read and do things easily, know how to run a long stream of water, and know how to drop water through a stone.

Besides, it is very important to know how to entertain. People who are good at learning to do things are almost all good at entertainment. All kinds of masters can entertain and learn more, and turn boring things into fun. For example, western research shows that smart children often know how to maintain their bodies and please their senses, which leads to a virtuous circle of body and mind. They are not only good at reading, but also beautiful and exquisite in shape. ...

After listening to the Taoist priest's words, I feel endless aftertaste and admire it very much. So I asked, Taoist, what does this have to do with "Chen Tuan's Sleeping Skill" in Taoism?

Taoist replied: Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism all have a view of sleep, and Taoism is the most different from Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Chen Tuan's sleeping technique is a wonderful work in the history of Taoist health preservation, which is inextricably linked with Qigong. If you are interested, let's make an appointment next time. I'll tell you in detail. ...
