The common yam is long and knotless, but the bergamot yam in Henggangshan area in the south wing of Dabie Mountain in Hubei Province is palm-shaped, which is said to have been carefully cultivated by Sima Daoxin, the fourth ancestor of Zen Buddhism, and has high nutritional and health care value. After the death of Daoxin, people called this kind of yam "bergamot yam" to commemorate this great Zen master, which made it have profound humanistic aesthetic significance.
It has been more than 300 years since the large-scale cultivation of bergamot yam in Qichun and Wuxue, Hubei Province. In Wuxue City, the yam in the southern foothills of Henggang Mountain and Yijianshan Mountain is the top grade, while in Qichun County, the yam in the northern mountainous area has the best quality, and a small amount is scattered in the surrounding areas such as Huangmei County of Xishui County.
