Chinese Braille Library's Writing Experience
On the east side of Taiping Street Road, Nanwei Road, Xicheng, there are always some visually impaired people coming in and out of a brand-new beige building. This is the newly completed Chinese Braille Library, the largest Braille library in China.

On the afternoon of 6th, Li Shuang, a visually impaired person who lives in Xizhimen, and his mother came here. "It's much more convenient to move here than in Lugou Bridge." Li Shuang sighed as soon as he entered the door.

China Braille Library covers an area of 28,000 square meters, including collection lending area, blind reading area and cultural research area. According to the age and degree of visual impairment, the reading area is divided into eight reading areas, such as Braille social science literature reading area and audio reading area.

The old Braille Library is located in Lugou Bridge. Due to the small space, there is no place for people to read and participate in various cultural activities. "Borrowed books are either mailed to blind readers or borrowed by readers from the library." Li Shuang recalled that due to the large size of documents for the blind, there were 17 documents for the blind made in one stop, and a Braille library card could only borrow four at a time. In order to amuse herself, she once got two library cards. "In this way, she can borrow more books at a time."

Blind documents are heavier and thicker. Here, a book tray is specially set under each desk, and the size of the book tray just matches the size of a document for the blind. When reading a book, the blind will touch the words with their hands flat on it, and they will not be very tired after a long time. There is also a small groove on the edge of each table for putting a blind stick.

On the basis of increasing the reading area here, the original borrowing and mailing services remain unchanged. Library cards issued by the old Braille library can continue to be used in the new library.

Different from the general library, in the reading area of the Braille library, an internet access area will be set up every few bookshelves, and each computer is equipped with sunshine voice screen reading software.

Blind people can rely on this software to let the computer read the text displayed on the screen and then perform various computer operations. Blind people can search books and download electronic resources of the library on the computer.

In order to facilitate the use of the blind, the computers here are equipped with Braille dot displays for the blind in addition to ordinary keyboards. The dot matrix display device can display the information on the computer synchronously in Braille, which is convenient for touching and reading. Through the cooperation with the screen reading software, the text read by the screen reading software can be displayed on the point display through Braille, and the Braille on the point display will automatically stand out when clicked, so that the blind can feel the text through touch.

Li Shuang said, "In the past, I asked someone to read to me, depending on whether my family was in a good mood. With the reading function of the computer, I can read books by myself. "

It is understood that with voice software, you can read 130 to 140 words per minute; When reading books in Braille, the reading speed of blind people who are proficient in Braille is similar to that of normal people with their eyes. Li Shuang, who visited the Braille Library for the first time, naturally can't miss the "Touch Museum", where all the exhibits can be touched. Blind people must wear barrier-free intelligent navigation terminals when entering the library. Every time I walk to an exhibit, the tour guide will automatically introduce the exhibit, and the visually impaired can listen and touch it.

There are topographic maps of China and detachable rocket models in the Touch Museum. Li Shuang's favorite is the chime, which she used to knock out the tune of "twinkling stars". What excited her most was that she felt the shape of the national emblem for the first time. "I used to just imagine, but now I finally feel where the five stars are."

The staff told Li Shuang that besides reading and visiting, there are many training courses and cultural lectures in the Braille Library. Famous artists such as Zhou have been invited to give lectures before, and writers and health experts such as Bi Shumin and Hong Shaoguang will be invited to give lectures after the National Day.

Amy, the mother who has been to Li Shuang, is a healthy person. She used to be a frequent visitor to the old Braille library. "The conditions here are much better than in the past, and the staff are very enthusiastic. As long as the children enter the library door, I am not worried. "

As the mother of a visually impaired child, Amy's only concern is the child's journey from home to the library. Although it is much closer than running the Lugou Bridge, she still hopes that the facilities and traffic lights for the blind around the library can be considered for the blind. In this way, children can often come here even without their own company. The head of the Braille Library said that the library also cooperated with relevant departments to collect volunteers to help the visually impaired. Especially when organizing some collective cultural lectures, we will try to let volunteers pick up the visually impaired at nearby stations.

In addition, the library is developing a barrier-free intelligent navigation service system for the blind. The navigation terminal of Touch Museum is based on this system. As long as the visually impaired wear this device, they will have voice prompts when passing through corridors, elevators and other directions, and strive to make the visually impaired walk smoothly in the Braille library without companionship.
