Luo Dalun's Interpretation of Yam in Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica

During the Republic of China, there was a famous doctor named Zhang Xichun who also had a special liking for yam. One of the characteristics of drug use in Zhang Xichun is that a single drug is often used, and a large quantity wins. What do you mean? That is, we usually go to Chinese medicine to see a doctor, and the doctor has to prescribe a lot of drugs. However, Zhang Xichun often prescribes only one kind of medicine, which can be prescribed in large quantities. Therefore, most patients get rid of the disease after taking it.

One day, a man came to Zhang Xichun and said that his wife suddenly fell ill after giving birth to a child. What's the matter? Cough and asthma. To what extent do you cough and gasp? Cough and asthma can't stop. At that time, the woman was lying in bed dying. Many invited doctors said there was no way, so the man invited Zhang Xichun. After seeing a woman's illness, Zhang Xichun prescribed a prescription, a single medicine-yam.

Zhang Xichun asked the woman's family to make soup for her with six or two yams every day. He called it blind drinking yam. As a result, one day after the woman took the medicine, her symptoms began to ease, and her body slowly recovered a few days later. Because Zhang Xichun thinks that the woman is puerperal qi deficiency, especially lung qi deficiency, she will keep coughing and wheezing. Zhang Xichun thinks that the white color of yam can just replenish spleen and lung in the lungs, which can change her weak state.

There are many diseases that yam can treat. For example, now girls have amenorrhea due to various reasons such as weight loss and fatigue, and now more and more women have amenorrhea in advance. How did Zhang Xichun treat these diseases? Is to use yam.

Zhang Xichun once treated a patient, a girl. The girl was unmarried, with less and less menstruation, and finally amenorrhea for more than a year. She lies in bed every day and has no strength all day. At that time, people thought that she had tuberculosis, which was incurable. How to treat Zhang Xichun? Just use yam. Tell her family to grind four or two yams into powder every day and boil water for the girl to drink. As a result, this prescription really worked. A month later, the girl's menstruation came again, which was really immediate.

Later, Zhang Xichun summed up his experience and said that this recipe can be supplemented with chicken's gizzard-membrane, because chicken's gizzard-membrane has the function of promoting blood circulation. Chicken gizzard-membrane alone is afraid of hurting people's health, so it is cooked with yam and given to women with abnormal amenorrhea. Why is it best to treat amenorrhea with yam? Because Chinese medicine believes that human blood is generated by subtle food absorbed by our spleen and stomach, that is to say, the spleen and stomach are the source of the sublimation of acquired qi and blood. Women's abnormal amenorrhea is mostly due to spleen and stomach weakness and lack of qi and blood, so using yam to invigorate the spleen and generate blood will naturally lead to menstruation.

The ancient Chinese yam is called Huai Yam, which is listed as the top grade in Shennong Herbal Classic. "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" records: "Yam is sweet and warm, which can make up deficiency and dispel cold and heat evil; Tonifying the middle energizer, invigorating qi and promoting granulation; Long clothes are smart, but light body is not hungry and prolongs life. " This sentence means that it can make up the middle jiao, and many doctors in later generations have discussed that yam can make up the middle jiao. Yam can also benefit people who are weak, become strong and grow muscles. Some people may wonder, how can yam make people grow muscles? Doctors in later generations believed that yam has the function of strengthening the spleen, because the spleen governs the muscles. Then strengthening the spleen can make people's muscles plump up. So people who have been weak can make up for it with yam. From the continuous clinical practice, later generations of doctors have concluded that yam not only has the function of tonifying the middle energizer, but also has the function of strengthening the spleen and kidney.

Modern medicine has also analyzed Chinese yam, believing that Chinese yam does contain many nutrients and is beneficial to human body. In particular, yam contains a dopamine, which is a substance produced by the brain to transmit information. Parkinson's disease is caused by insufficient dopamine secretion in the brain. Therefore, patients with Parkinson's disease can eat more yam.

In ancient times, yam was divided into raw yam and fried yam. Raw yam is dried and sliced. If fried with fire, it is called fried yam. The role of raw yam is to strengthen the spleen and nourish yin, and its medicinal properties are cold; Fried yam has the function of strengthening the spleen.

Chinese medicine generally uses yam to decoct, and sometimes it is made into pills. For example, there is a prescription called Dioscorea pill in the classic of Chinese medicine "Synopsis of the Golden Chamber". In fact, yam pills are pills made of yam as the main medicine. This prescription is for the deficiency of human body.

During the Republic of China, many Chinese medicine practitioners used yam as the main medicine to make mountain pills to make up for the deficiency of the human body and treat serious diseases. Traditional Chinese medicine often writes "Huai Yam" when prescribing prescriptions. Why is it called "Chinese yam"? Because the best yam is mostly produced in Huaiqing. Huaiqing is today's Jiaozuo, Henan Province, where there are "four major Huai medicines"-Huai Dihuang, Huai Yam, Huai Chrysanthemum and Achyranthes bidentata. Huaiqing's "Sihuai Medicine" is an authentic medicinal material, so the therapeutic effect is also the best. Therefore, many Chinese medicine practitioners will write Chinese yam when prescribing, which is the yam produced in Huaiqing Prefecture.

Regarding yam, there is a good diet remedy-goldfish soup. Jinyu soup is made of chestnuts, yam and mutton. It's best to use yam sold in Chinese pharmacy. If there is no yam, we will go to the vegetable market to buy yam ourselves, peel it at home and cut it into yam slices. Chestnuts need a little mashing. In this way, one or two chestnuts, two or two yams and three or two mutton are put together to make soup. The boiled soup is very fragrant and beautiful. Chestnuts are golden yellow and yam is white. You see these two things are in the pot, just like gold and jade, so they are called Jinyutang. This is the Taoist regimen. Among them, chestnuts tonify the spleen, yams tonify the spleen and mutton tonify the yang, which can tonify the yang of our body.

When people use yam for health care, it is convenient to make porridge. Yam porridge has a long history, and the records of immortals in past dynasties are related to yam porridge. So, how to make yam porridge? We use 30 grams of Chinese yam, plus Gordon Euryale 10 grams, Gordon Euryale has the function of astringing and strengthening the kidney. Put more coix seed, about 20 grams. Finally add some rice. Yam, Euryale ferox and Coix seed are matched together, which can be described as tonifying deficiency and purging excess, and the combination is perfect. Coix seed is wet, Euryale ferox is kidney-strengthening, so it won't make Coix seed too wet; Yam can tonify spleen, lung and kidney, and this porridge is equivalent to reinforcing diarrhea. If this kind of porridge can be eaten regularly, it is very good for those who are prone to diabetes, thirst, dry mouth, hunger, obesity and qi deficiency.

Chinese medicine has one of the most famous prescriptions-Liuwei Dihuang Pill, which contains yam. Yam is white, and white enters the lungs, so it can replenish lung yin. Yam is sweet and enters the spleen, so yam can tonify spleen yin. At the same time, it can enter the kidney meridian and play a role in strengthening the kidney. Therefore, in Liuwei Dihuang Pill, yam can tonify lung, spleen and kidney at the same time.

Many elderly people have itchy skin, that is, every autumn and winter, the skin will itch and feel uncomfortable for no reason. Why is this? Because the air is dry in autumn and winter, the lung yin is insufficient, the lung governs the fur, and the lung deficiency can't moisten the fur, so people will feel itchy skin. So what should we do? We can take another kind of yam porridge to relieve itchy skin. This yam porridge is made of 30g yam, prepared Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. 15g (processed Polygonum multiflorum Thunb.) and 9g Rehmannia glutinosa in a casserole. Drink medicine juice and eat yam after cooking. Everyone should pay attention not to eat Polygonum Multiflori Radix and Radix Rehmanniae, but only the yam inside. This fruit juice has the function of moistening lung, benefiting kidney and nourishing yin. After adequate body fluids, the symptoms of itchy skin will naturally be alleviated.

Children diarrhea can also be treated with yam porridge. That is, when we cook rice porridge, we add yam. When the porridge is cooked, we can give it to the children, because yam is easy to cook, and when the porridge is cooked, yam will be cooked. According to Zhang Xichun's experience, if the child's diarrhea is serious, you can also use cooked egg yolk, crush it and put it in this porridge, and give it to the child to eat, and the diarrhea will be better.
