Bird's nest is mostly produced in Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. Bird's nest is also produced along the southeast coast of Hainan Island in China and along the Yunnan border. Indonesia's output is about 80%, Thailand's 5%, Malaysia 13%, and others account for 2%. The texture and taste of bird's nest from different habitats are different. Indonesia's bird's nest has less impurities and is cleaner, so it tastes smoother. The bird's nest in Thailand is thicker and produces less. There are many hairy swallows in Malaysia, which are processed into swallow cakes.

Indonesia is a "country of thousands of islands". In Indonesia, there are differences between bird's nest on the outer island and bird's nest on the inner island. The industry in the inner island is very developed and the pollution is serious. Therefore, the bird's nest produced in the inner island is called "polluted bird's nest" or "black swallow" in the industry.
