What is the meaning of Yin and Yang in TCM?
Yin and Yang are two nouns, the opposite of everything. They are used to show that everything has a contradiction between yin and yang, and everything develops and changes in contradiction. So Su Wen said: "Yin and Yang, the way of heaven and earth (the fundamental law of the unity of opposites in nature), the discipline of everything (everything can only follow this law, but not violate it), the changing parents (everything changes according to this law), the beginning of birth and death (everything begins with this law), and the shrine (this is where all the secrets of nature lie). Treatment must be based on this (man is one of the creatures in nature, and treatment must seek this fundamental law). "

In the concept of traditional Chinese medicine, the human body is produced and formed by amphoteric substances represented by yin and yang. So Su Wen said: "The foundation of life lies in Yin and Yang." He also said, "Yang gives birth to Yin, while Yang kills Yin and hides. Yang is shaped by qi and yin. " It is also believed that human beings are the unity of opposites of Yin and Yang, and they must always maintain a relative balance between Yin and Yang in order to live a normal life. Therefore, Su Wen said: "Yin people are good at hiding essence, while Yang people are honest ... Yin Pingyang is the secret, and the spirit is the rule." If the yin and yang of the human body are out of balance for a while, it will inevitably get sick. The purpose of treating diseases is to balance yin and yang. Therefore, Su Wen also pointed out: "Yin wins Yang disease, and Yang wins Yin disease; Yang wins is hot, and Yin wins is cold; Heavy cold is hot, and heavy heat is cold. ..... check its yin and yang, not rigid and soft, yang disease cures yin, and yin disease cures yang. " Since the human body is the unity of opposites of Yin and Yang, it can cure diseases and prolong life by keeping the relative balance of Yin and Yang.

Because everything in nature is the unity of opposites of Yin and Yang, and it is produced by bisexual substances represented by Yin and Yang, the human body should not only keep the balance of Yin and Yang in the body, but also adapt to the nature of Yin and Yang. Therefore, in Su Wen, it is repeatedly said that "nourishing heaven and earth, grasping yin and yang", "harmonizing yin and yang, adjusting the four seasons", "harmonizing heaven and earth, following the eight winds" and "governing heaven and earth like the sun and the moon". Who can adapt to natural conditions and keep the balance between internal and external environment in this way can achieve the goal of longevity and health in health preservation and disease prevention.

Although the diagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine includes the differentiation of six meridians, the division of qi and blood of ying-wei triple energizer, and the difference between zang-fu organs and meridians, when it comes to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis, it is always inseparable from the eight categories of yin-yang deficiency and excess. Among the eight categories, Yin and Yang are the general categories of the other six categories. In other words, although the disease syndromes are ever-changing, they are always nothing more than yin and yang. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand that the dialectical principle of diagnosis should also take yin and yang as the general program. Therefore, in Su Wen, there are some sayings, such as "those who are good at diagnosing diseases, seeing the color and pulse, saying goodbye to Yin and Yang", "observing their Yin and Yang, avoiding rigidity and softness", "those who know the pulse have Yin and Yang, and those who know Yin know Yang", and "being careful about Yin and Yang, not colluding with others", all of which indicate that Yin and Yang are the primary key to syndrome differentiation.

Generally speaking, the diagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine mainly refers to comprehensive symptoms, repeated observation, analysis and induction, and discrimination between yin and yang. If yang is superior, it belongs to yang syndrome, and if yin is superior, it belongs to yin syndrome. In addition, there is the phenomenon that yang flourishes due to yin failure, or yin flourishes due to yang failure, or both yin and yang are deficient, which is also a very important issue in syndrome differentiation. Only by mastering these key problems can we have a guide to syndrome differentiation and treatment, and we can achieve more confident treatment.

The general application rules of traditional Chinese medicine are four qi, five flavors, lifting, lifting and so on. These laws are all produced under the guidance of yin-yang theory.

Taking the four qi as an example, "cold and cool" belongs to yin, and "warm" belongs to yang; As far as the five flavors are concerned, "pungent and sweet" diverges into yang, "sour and bitter" overflows into yin, "salty" overflows into yin, and "light" permeates into yang. In terms of smell, there are differences in thickness. For example, Su Wen said: "Thick taste is yin, and thin taste is yin and yang; Thick gas is yang, and thin gas is yin of yang. " As for the rise and fall, floating is yang and it is yin. To apply Chinese medicine, we must be familiar with these fundamental laws before we can use them correctly.
