It may be because of the lack of precious materials that animals can't be fed at the beginning of the play. When you have enough precious materials, get close to a creature and see if there are any tips. If so, then hold down the space bar (PS4 version) and you can take out some materials to feed the creatures. Some creatures will give you some other precious resources after feeding, or take you somewhere, which is usually a good place to hide treasure.
