Lycium barbarum is sweet in taste and flat in nature, which has been recorded in herbal books of past dynasties and has the function of tonifying and strengthening. Regardless of the deficiency of essence and blood or kidney yang, it can nourish liver and kidney and benefit essence and blood. Although Lycium barbarum is the main medicine for nourishing yin, it is actually a product for nourishing yin and strengthening yang. Materia Medica Yan Hui spoke highly of Lycium barbarum, believing that it has the characteristics of ginseng, astragalus, angelica, prepared rhizome of rehmannia, cinnamon, aconite root, anemarrhena rhizome, phellodendron bark, scutellaria root, coptis root, atractylodes rhizome, magnolia bark, notopterygium root, pubescent angelica root and divaricate Saposhnikovia root. According to its introduction, Lycium barbarum has the functions of invigorating qi and nourishing blood, nourishing yin and strengthening yang. The author believes that its efficacy is mainly reflected in the following six aspects:
1 Nourishing yin and benefiting liver and kidney
From the discussion of doctors in past dynasties, Lycium barbarum is mainly used to tonify liver blood and kidney yin, and is often used for the syndrome of deficiency of essence and blood. For example, Guilu Erxian Glue is used to treat nocturnal emission due to kidney deficiency, soreness of waist and knees and deficiency of both yin and yang, so it is compatible with velvet antler, tortoise plastron and ginseng. Yiguanjian is compatible with Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Radix Adenophorae, Fructus Toosendan and Radix Ophiopogonis for treating hypochondriac pain due to liver yin deficiency. Qiju Dihuang Pill, Liuwei Dihuang plus Lycium barbarum and Chrysanthemum, is used to treat dim eyes, dizziness and tinnitus caused by yin deficiency of liver and kidney.

Therefore, many prescriptions for prolonging life contain Lycium barbarum, such as Guilingji, Yannian Guangsi Pill and Huanshaodan. For ordinary people, in order to prolong life, you can also use 3 grams of Lycium barbarum, American ginseng, Polygonatum sibiricum and bergamot as the basic formula to replace tea, with a slight increase or decrease according to your physical condition.

Zhu Liangchun, a master of traditional Chinese medicine, believes that Lycium barbarum can stop bleeding, especially for gingival bleeding caused by chronic liver disease. It seems that this kind of bleeding is not just a problem of nosebleed. As long as the pathogenesis is consistent, adding Fang Yaozhong Lycium barbarum based on syndrome differentiation can improve the curative effect.
5. Nourish yin to stop stomachache
Lycium barbarum enters not only the liver and kidney meridians, but also the lung and stomach meridians. Wang believes that Lycium barbarum "cures heart dryness and heartache", and the heartache here refers to stomach pain. Judging from dryness, it is stomach pain due to yin deficiency.
Liu Duzhou often treats stomach pain due to disharmony between liver and stomach due to yin deficiency, less red tongue coating, dry throat and thready pulse. The prescription is Lycium barbarum, Radix Adenophorae, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Rehmanniae, Radix Ophiopogonis, Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati, Dendrobium, Melia azedarach, Fructus Hordei Germinatus and Plum Blossom. This prescription has a good curative effect on severe atrophic gastritis combined with this pathogenesis.
For atrophic gastritis, Zhu Liangchun often increases the dosage of Lycium barbarum in the syndrome differentiation prescription, and the effect is very good. Sometimes taking Lycium barbarum 10g alone and chewing it twice a day has a good curative effect, even for those with intestinal metaplasia.
Step 6 nourish yin and quench thirst
Wang believes that Lycium barbarum "cures thirst to induce drinking, and kidney disease eliminates middle jiao", and Chinese materia medica records that Lycium barbarum "cures malnutrition", both of which have the effect of treating thirst. Clinically, it is often combined with Radix Astragali, Radix Rehmanniae, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Radix Puerariae, Euonymus japonicus, Cornus officinalis, etc., and is effective for diabetes with deficiency of both qi and yin.
The usual dosage of Lycium barbarum in decoction is 10 ~ 20g, which is 3 ~ 5g instead of tea. Exogenous fever and diarrhea due to spleen deficiency are prohibited.
