The most important thing is to remember: treat newborn kittens like human newborn babies. Be sure to keep it clean. I always wash my hands with disinfectant soap before and after feeding my kittens, change their blankets every morning and wash them with hot water soap-in order to prevent the growth and spread of germs.
The second important thing is to remember that newborn kittens need to keep warm and have enough water and nutrition. You can keep them warm in different ways. My favorite way is to put a heating lamp on their nest and make a nest for them with a soft blanket. Another way is to use a small electric blanket, set it at a low level, cover it with a towel, cover it with a blanket, and then put the kitten on the blanket. Don't be too hot, just keep warm. Remember to keep the corners of the nest cool. If the kitten is too hot, it can climb there.
By observation, you can probably know the age of the kitten. If they still have umbilical cord, it is about 1-3 days; If their eyes haven't been opened, it's about 1- 10 days. By 10 days, they should have almost opened their eyes. Gently open their mouths and touch the teeth inside. If a deciduous tooth has a sharp point, it is about 2 weeks old. If they try to stand up, they are about 2-3 weeks old If they start playing, they will be four weeks old.
Don't feed the newborn kitten with milk, feed it with cat milk powder. There are several brands of milk powder, such as K.M.R and Nurtuall. I like milk powder products. After the cat's milk is washed, the temperature should be similar to the body temperature. Don't feed the kitten cold milk. When feeding a kitten with a cat bottle, just open the kitten's mouth and put the pacifier in. Sometimes it may be necessary to squeeze the bottle first to let the milk flow out. Don't hold the baby cat like a human. Be sure to keep the kitten on your lap and feed it all the time. Kittens should suck by themselves. Be sure to feed the kitten in a prone position. If not, you are likely to feed milk to its lungs.
Don't feed the hypothermia kitten right away, put it next to your body to warm up first. Feed it with Pedialyte (a kind of glucose water for babies with diarrhea): once every hour 1 feed 1cc, slowly warm the kitten to a warm state and wriggle. When it is warm, you can feed it cat milk powder. A kitten with hypothermia stops working because of its small intestine and stomach. If it is fed with cat milk powder before it warms up, it will not be digested.
The renal function of newborn kittens is only 25% of that of adults, so they can't concentrate urine and need to excrete a lot of diluted urine. Kittens will be dehydrated soon if they don't eat, so if they lose weight, they should consider dehydration. Dehydrated kittens have dry mouth, bright pink tongue or mucus in their mouths. You can pull up the skin on the back of the kitten's neck. If the skin does not return to its original state, but keeps pulling up, it is dehydrated. In addition, if the kitten's urine is unclear, but it is obviously yellow, it is also a sign of dehydration. Everyone who feeds newborn kittens should have sub-Q solution and injections. Injecting sub-Q solution saved many kittens. Weigh the kitten every day to see if it grows normally and healthily. I have a special notebook to record the kitten's weight, age and vaccination.
The third thing to remember is that kittens don't know how to behave. Ideally, they want their mother cat to help them defecate and clean up. But we don't have this condition. I heard many people say that they should gently wipe the kitten's ass with a warm cotton pad and let it defecate. However, mom's tongue feels like sandpaper. I wipe my ass with a paper towel (a big paper towel used in the kitchen, which is rough in texture, not the kind used to wipe my face) under warm tap water. Remember that they must defecate. Urine should be clear and stool should be shaped (below: wipe PP with wet cotton ball to stimulate defecation).
Don't be afraid to give your kitten a bath. You can use disinfectant soap in the first few weeks (be careful not to get it in your eyes), and then slowly transition to cat shampoo. Dry well and blow dry with the low temperature block of the hair dryer. Dry them and put them in the cat's nest as soon as possible. The main reason why I use disinfectant soap is because I don't know their previous living environment, so I'd better be careful to avoid catching any diseases.
When kittens are four weeks old, they can be taught to use the litter box. Use shallow pots and ordinary cat litter (non-caking soil or sand). Never let such a small cat use caked cat litter, because they will play in the cat litter basin and eat the cat litter. When they use the dustbin for the first time, you will be proud of them. Put them in and let them go to the toilet every time they drink milk. Generally, they naturally like to use cat litter. If you are lucky enough to have more than one kitten, you will find that one likes to use cat litter, and the others are all around. If there is, remove the troublemaker first and let the kitten who wants to use cat litter to go to the toilet concentrate. Many newborn kittens think that the cat sand basin is just a big sand table, so they like to play in it and pile sand everywhere. They are very happy.
Upper respiratory tract infection is a common disease of kittens, which can be spread through the air, so sick kittens should be isolated. You need oxytetracycline, which is an eye ointment, to let the doctor prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs for them first. I haven't seen a wild cat that doesn't need this eye cream. When we adopted them, they were all sick, and it was easy for our eyes to find problems. ...
Anal thermometer and vaseline are also useful. Taking the cat's temperature is very simple. Just dip the thermometer in vaseline and put it in the anus. Put it about one inch (2.5CM) and wait at least 1 minute, preferably 2 minutes. The kitten's temperature is between 37 and 39 degrees. If it is higher than 39 degrees, you will have a fever. Take it to the doctor. (The body temperature measured from the thigh root is relatively low, so it should be raised by half a degree-Suyun note).
An easy mistake to avoid is overfeeding. Too much feeding will make kittens have diarrhea, so it's best to avoid this easy-to-avoid mistake. (30
CC is equivalent to 1 ounce of milk) (it should be washed milk-Suyun note)
1 week-old kittens eat about 4 ounces a day and feed 32CC of milk 6 times.
A two-week-old kitten should weigh about 7 ounces and be fed 56 ml of milk four times a day.
A 3-week-old kitten should weigh about 10 ounce and be fed 80 ml of milk three times a day.
A 4-week-old kitten should weigh about 13 ounces and be fed 104CC milk three times a day.
However, there is no certain rule. The kitten you feed may have a big appetite or a small appetite. The full kitten has a bulging belly, but it is not tight. I must set an alarm clock and feed the newborn kitten every three hours. Sometimes I really don't like getting up in the morning to feed them, but I have formed a habit and can't sleep at night. Setting an alarm clock can ensure that kittens are well fed. Daily gain 10g or 1/3oz. If the stool is normal, the feeding amount is appropriate. Feeding too much will reduce digestive enzymes, and finally you will find that the stool looks like a milk cube. If this happens, stop feeding milk powder and feed pediolyte and water until the stool is normal.
If I only feed a kitten, I find it helpful to put a small velvet animal toy in its nest. It will sleep on it. In addition, you can put a small alarm clock in a velvet animal and wrap it with original filler to suppress the sound of the alarm clock. Sometimes kittens think the sound is safe. Kittens are very fragile, so I pay special attention. Once they get sick, it is difficult to save them. When we take on the responsibility of feeding such a kitten, we take on a task facing the danger of death. They may be born with congenital diseases that we can't reverse, and sometimes these problems will not appear until the kitten is 2-3 weeks old. 1996 summer, my litter of kittens looked like this. Two of them were born with cleft palate and were euthanized. The third one lived for three weeks but died of intestinal dysplasia. I think the first child born in spring is often the healthiest, and the kitten born later is sometimes not enough to provide good development conditions for the fetus because of the nutritional consumption of the mother. If a kitten dies, try to remind yourself what you gave it, because that may be the only love it knows. Feeding and keeping warm are what kittens need most. I don't know how much to feed, so I'd rather feed less. If you feed it and help it drain, it will still cry, maybe it is uncomfortable after eating, or it is too cold. Keep the temperature in the cat's nest at 30 degrees. It is best to put a thermometer in its nest so as to check the temperature at any time. You can also pat your back with your palm, or pat your side with your fingers to see if there is gas in your stomach. Just checking with common sense.
When the umbilical cord falls off, pay attention to the place around the navel, and you can wipe it with hydrogen peroxide slightly, because it is easy to be infected there. I often do things that make kittens cute. I often treat them like real female cats, biting them with my teeth, moving them, licking their little heads and often hugging them. I hope these practices can encourage you to help feed orphaned cats.
Many times, when you have a litter of kittens, when they are 2-3 weeks old, they will crawl around the nest looking for something to suck, so they will naturally find other kittens in the same litter. Besides it is a bad habit, they may eat and pee. Every time they finish urinating, they put bitter apples on their buttocks (a smell that cats don't like). This unpalatable but harmless thing can be bought in any pet store. It was originally used to prevent cats from biting wires, but I found it very helpful to prevent kittens from developing the bad habit of sucking other kittens. If they can't get rid of this bad habit, they can only be separated and can't suck each other. Every time you change food for them, it may affect their stools, such as changing milk powder. If they are constipated, you can try adding a few drops of cooking oil (vegetable oil) to the milk. If this doesn't solve the problem, you can try "kitten push-ups". Hold the kitten with one hand, put its hind leg on the palm of the other hand, and gently push it up and down a few times to move its abdominal muscles. They hate it, but I like it very much. Watching them stare at me, I laughed at them while singing to them.
By the way, I forgot one thing-the baby's nose drops. Kittens often can't smell anything when they have upper respiratory tract infection. When they can't smell, they usually stop eating. About twice a day, use children's nasal drops to drop water into the nostrils, let them get through the nasal cavity, let them smell it, and then eat. Put it down before feeding.
If the kitten looks a little sick, put a little syrup in its mouth. Sometimes they just need this little energy to help them regain their strength and start eating.
You may find that these cute little guys can eat at three weeks. I often add a little baby rice flour to their milk at this time. To be honest, I don't believe that rice flour will give them more nutrition, but it will make them last longer than pure milk. Maybe you need to add some rice flour to make them sleep longer so that they can sleep at night.
I am feeding a very small female cat now. She is three weeks old, but she weighs only five pounds. 5 ounces, she eats well, defecates normally, but grows very small. I don't know her health background because I started feeding after she was born. I give her12-15cccsub-q twice a day. In addition to rice noodles, I gave her 1/2 ounces (15 grams) of chicken formula (very broken). If you add bought meat to your kitten, you must pay attention to the formula of the food. Don't have onions, it will hurt the kitten.
If you can't buy the finished cat milk powder at the moment, I'll give you a cat milk formula, which can be used temporarily:
1 can 12 oz skim milk,
1 can 4 oz. full-fat evaporated milk,
1 can 4 ounces of plain yogurt.
Three egg yolks,
Stir well, filter and feed them warmly.
The following is an alternative formula for pedialyte (I think it can also be replaced by giving welfare-Eiko note):
4 1/4 cup of water (one cup = 200ml)
2-8 teaspoons of sugar
1/2 teaspoons of salt
1/2 teaspoons of baking soda
This can be fed to kittens who are dehydrated or have signs of upper respiratory tract infection.
Kittens taken away from their mothers are often one or two weeks old and may not be used to bottle feeding. It just needs to help it through continuous efforts, insist on giving it a bottle, and let it know that food comes from the bottle now, not from the mother. As you can imagine, this is a bit difficult to accept. Kittens can sometimes persist for 24 hours without eating. Put the pacifier in their mouth and squeeze the bottle. They will learn to eat. If you haven't eaten for 65,438+02 hours, your kitten's blood sugar will be too low, so it will help to feed them some water mixed syrup (Carol syrup). I don't know what Carol syrup is, but honey should be ok.
Pay attention to the new kitten's stool. If it has diarrhea, it can be cured by taking amoxicillin. If the stool is dark and almost black, it means that there is blood in the stool and you need to see a doctor.
If a kitten is born to a wild cat mother and has lived with her mother for a period of time, it is likely to carry fleas. Never use shampoo to kill fleas, they are too young. You need to bathe them often and catch fleas with a comb with fine teeth. Fleas are fatal to newborn kittens. I once saw a kitten weighing only 4 ounces crawling with fleas. It sounds disgusting, but there is no choice but to eliminate fleas.
Very small kittens may never have a bite of their mother's milk, and sometimes they may be unable to breastfeed because they are weak or sick, so you need to use tube feeding. This is not a difficult thing to do, but doing it wrong will kill the kitten. I'll post a picture here to make it easier for you to understand what's going on. Weigh the kitten with a catheter (No.5 French for the kitten and 10 for the larger one) and a needle, calculate the amount it should eat within 24 hours, and divide it into six portions (feeding in six times). Measure the distance from the kitten's mouth to the last rib, and measure the same length on the catheter. Finally, put a piece of tape on your mouth to make a mark, heat the cat's milk and suck it up with a needle to ensure that there are no bubbles in the needle. Dip the catheter head in the cat's milk, let the kitten taste it, and then send the catheter down the throat until you mark it. Then stop and listen to whether the kitten is crying, to make sure you don't insert a catheter into its lungs. Then slowly push the cat's milk into its stomach. This may be the only way for kittens to get nutrition. Please pay attention to the accuracy of the measurement, and wait to see if the kitten cries after placing the catheter. Pumping liquid directly into the kitten's lungs is not only easy to make mistakes, but also fatal.
Another common problem is dehydration. I have met more than one dehydrated kitten in every season with kittens. As I mentioned earlier, you can help the kitten dehydrate by injecting sub-Q solution. You can buy it from a doctor, or you can buy needles and needles. You can buy a needle of 20CC size. The size of the needle depends on the size of the kitten. Fine needles are easy to pierce the skin, but the injection time is long, and the injection speed of thick needles is fast, but they will leave relatively large pinholes on the skin. Grab the skin of the scapula and grab enough so that the needle can pierce the skin. The dosage of sub-Q solution depends on the weight of the kitten. Ask the doctor how much to inject. I always heat the liquid in the microwave oven a little, only a little, because I don't want to inject cold liquid into the kitten. Stick the needle into your skin and push the liquid in. Pull out the needle after pushing, and press the pinhole with your fingertips for one minute. If it is not blocked, water will leak out from there. Don't be afraid to do it, it may save the kitten. The kitten in this photo is called Darlene. She suddenly stopped eating. After a few hours, I decided to give her some Q's. Thank you for trying.
