It is not a 2 1 1 engineering university, nor is it a 985 engineering university. Sichuan University of Science & Engineering is located in Zigong City, Sichuan Province, and has been selected as one of the national "Basic Capacity Building Projects of Colleges and Universities in the Midwest, Education and Training Plan for Outstanding Engineers, and Sichuan 20 1 1 Plan". It is a key university in Sichuan Province and an excellent university evaluated by the Ministry of Education. The school's predecessor was the Southwest Branch of East China Institute of Chemical Technology, which was established in 1965. 1979 approved by the Ministry of Education, Sichuan Institute of Chemical Technology was established on the basis of the former Southwest Branch of East China Institute of Chemical Technology, and 1983 was renamed Sichuan Institute of Light Chemical Technology. In April 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Sichuan Institute of Light Chemical Industry and Zigong Institute of Education merged to form Sichuan Institute of Technology.
