Plot:
In 480 BC, Xue Xisi, the king of Persia, inherited the legacy of Darius, the former king, and pro-unified 300,000 warships, known as the million-strong army, to kill Greece, aiming at showing off his force and promoting the division of the Greek city-state.
The Greek Coalition forces set up the initial defense line in Maupile, a mountain pass in central Greece. Hot springs are close to the back of the sea, and the mountains are high and the roads are narrow, so it is easy to defend but difficult to attack. Spartan King Leonidas personally led 300 elite soldiers of his country, plus 4,000 from the Peloponnesus to guard this pass. They fought with dozens of Persian troops, and the Persian army took turns to attack for two days, causing heavy casualties. On the third day, the king of Persia, led by a Greek traitor, sent his chosen men to bypass the inaccessible mountain road and copy the back road of Leonidas. Leonidas ordered 4000 Peloponnesian troops to withdraw from the battlefield, and he took 300 Spartan to defend the hot spring pass until they were all killed.
The Persian army paid a heavy price in this battle, and two brothers of King Xue Xisi of Persia were killed in this battle. At the same time, Leonidas and 300 Spartan warriors fought to the death, which won valuable time for the transfer of the main force of the Greek army and the reorganization of the navy. Athens and Sparta took the lead, and the whole Greek city-state responded. Under the banner of defending independence and freedom, the Greeks, who are famous for their strong independence and lack of coordination, finally achieved unprecedented unity. Finally, in the fierce battle with the Greeks, the Persian army collapsed and fled back to the East. In the same year, the Greek navy headed by Athens turned from defensive to offensive, crossed the Aegean Sea and invaded Asia Minor. Countries in Asia Minor responded one after another and became independent from Persian tyranny.
Behind the scenes:
About the original work
The first film about the Battle of Hot Springs Pass was 1962 Spartan 300 Warriors, which was written by Frank? Miller is only five years old. Looking back at the 300 warriors in Sparta, the dialogue in the film looks very old now, but one episode-several of the 300 warriors who fought to the end were killed by disorderly arrows-deeply shocked Miller at that time. Five-year-old Miller has been able to read comic books and newspapers, and is used to seeing heroes win. This is the first time he realized that a hero is not necessarily the one who laughs last. "That's a massacre! But shocking. " Miller later commented on the plot.
That plot is bound to have far-reaching significance for Miller's creative career, because Miller's works are full of tragic heroes. For example, the famous cartoon "The Return of the Dark Knight" supporting the legend of Batman in an era, the old hero has retired for many years, but for various reasons, he has to return to the rivers and lakes to fight against various evil forces. The climax scene is the battle between the old hero and his former comrade-in-arms, Superman. Miller concluded that the characters he is best at portraying are those tragic heroes, and no matter how hard they try, they are always hopelessly defeated by fate. They lost the last battle, but they won the hearts of the people.
This complex extends to the 300 Spartans. Since the mid-1990s, Miller has been collecting information to prepare for the creation of the Spartan 300 Warriors.
About the film
At first, the producers of "Sparta 300 Warriors" talked to Miller about cooperation. Miller is reluctant because 300 pounds means a lot to him. In his own words, The 300 Warriors of Sparta was the brilliant peak of his career. "He can't stand his efforts being adapted into a Hollywood blockbuster like Troy. But after watching a few shots of Shoot, he was deeply shocked and agreed to authorize it. But the director put it another way, "Miller authorized us because no one else in the world can shoot the original. "
About starring
Spartan king Leonidas plays Gerald? Gerard butler's performance was very popular, but he was lucky to get the role. There are at least 15 candidates for this role, and everyone works very hard in the gym to get this role. As a result, when they put on Persian robes to audition, everyone looked like the old Persian king. Steven Gerrard said with a smile that the director at that time was probably very picky, because he came to Steven Gerrard and said "Try this guy" without even asking who he was-the director of his favorite movie couldn't name himself, which made the ambitious Steven Gerrard suffer greatly. But the director proved that he had a good eye. Gerrard tried several shots and everyone said, "That man is the mad king of Sparta"!
About shooting
The director told all the actors in advance that there should be bodybuilding champions in the camera, not white-faced teenagers. In order to encourage the actors to work hard to shape, the director ordered someone to make a T-shirt, which read "I died in the battle of hot spring pass". However, some actors who are tired of fitness secretly said that "it is really easy to die happily compared with the devil's fitness every day."
About clothing
From conception to completion, Miller spent about ten years consulting a lot of materials and talking with many experts. It can be said that it is a very loyal historical work of 300 Spartans-however, the so-called "loyalty" of artists is naturally different from that of historians. Historically, Spartans wore heavy armor when fighting, and some people's armor weighed half their weight. Miller thought that such costumes would make the tragic Spartans look like turtles, so he changed the costumes of the characters in the original work. The king of Sparta and his men wore scarlet shirts, half naked and lean. Those uniforms look like swimming trunks made of leather. Miller said: "in ancient Greek themes, characters are usually naked;" For the same artistic consideration, I stripped the soldiers of their clothes. "
Trivia:
Sasha jackson Siena? Sienna miller and Sylvia? Colloca once competed for the role of Gog, the wife of Spartan queen Leonidas;
Although the film is magnificent, it only took 60 days to shoot, including 1 day for location shooting.
In order to show that 300 Spartans were indeed the most heroic soldiers at that time, the actors (including supporting actors) who participated in the filming received high-intensity physical fitness and fighting training for half a year before shooting. At the beginning of the training, some actors lamented that "this training is worse than death."
In order to highlight the infectious effect of the film, the director slightly adjusted some battle scenes-that is to say, the spartan phalanx and the fighting way of waving weapons at the enemy camp we saw in the film Sparta 300 Warriors are actually far from the historical truth;
There is an important character in the play: the Greek free baker. He did not appear in the original novel, but his scenes integrated the battle of Wenquanguan with the battles of other city-states against Persian invasion.
About music
Tyler bates, a musician, worked with the film director on Eating the Living. He was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Chicago. In the early 1990s, Bates entered the fields of film music and experimental rock. On the one hand, she helps some B-rated films to create music, on the other hand, she forms a pet band with singer Lisa Papineau. Tori Amos, a female singer, persuaded the Atlantic brand to sign the band "Pets" after watching the performance of "Pets" in a club in Los Angeles. When the pet band began to become popular with Limp Bizkit and Blink 182, Bates suddenly had the desire to compose music for the film. 1997, Bates announced that he had left the orchestra and devoted himself to the field of film music creation. He made his mark with films such as High Spirit starring Keanu Levi and Killing starring Stallone. From 2004 to 2007, Bates gradually established his position in the field of audio-visual creation of thriller and horror films under the series of works such as Eating the Living Raw, The Ripper, Castle of the Evil Spirit 3 and Moonlight Panic.
Facing this revolutionary film with themes of love, freedom, faith, brotherhood, justice, fear, death and glory, Bates used percussion to strengthen the dynamic energy of the battle scenes in the film, and then switched the drama themes stated in the film through the overlapping changes of timbres with deep emotional tension of large orchestras, choirs and Iranian female singer azam ali's chorus (Billboard praised her as a dazzling and unforgettable vocal instrument). In addition, Baylor also designed a colorful scene sound stage for the film through layered vocal singing and instrumental music, which activated the mythical color and horror atmosphere in the film anytime and anywhere.
About special effects
Presumably, many fans have seen the trailer of this movie, and its realistic and illusory image style fully embodies the creative essence of the original author Frank Miller. In fact, in order to achieve this effect, the film director Zach Snyder can be said to have exhausted all his skills. The filming process of the film almost completely uses digital background technology. With the help of this advanced image technology, the film not only does not need real-life shooting at all, but also can meet the requirements of any image spectacle that the director wants to achieve with the help of computer production in the later stage. In the process of shooting, what the director has to do is to direct the actors to perform in front of the blue screen. I believe many people were impressed by the previous film "Sin City", which was also shot with this technology. Coincidentally, Sin City is also adapted from the original book of the same name by cartoonist Frank Miller. Specifically, the shooting methods of the two films are still different: Sin City was shot with a digital camera, while Sparta 300 Warriors used a traditional camera. This "digital background technology" has two advantages: the shooting cost is greatly reduced; In addition, it provides more creative space for directors. With the scale of this film, even if it is part of the live shooting, the cost will increase exponentially. As far as the picture style is concerned, Rodriguez and Frank Miller, who can be called directors' wizards, rely on this advanced digital background technology to maintain the dark tone of the original work and many characteristics of the comic art of Sin City, and finally create such a unique and excellent film. And this "Spartan 300 Warriors" must use this technology to create a unique picture effect. Because every frame of this movie needs computer special effects and background, post-production takes more time than ordinary movies. In the year-long post-production, in order to finish it as soon as possible, director Zach Snyder specially hired as many as nine computer special effects production companies in the United States and Canada to participate in the production.
About the shooting time
Sparta 300 Warriors is Zach Snyder's second film. Compared with other war epic films, the most attractive part of Sparta 300 Warriors lies in the presentation form of the film, which will leave an unforgettable impression on the audience. The director kept the story structure and details of Frank Miller's original works to the greatest extent, and created an unprecedented spectacular and mysterious ancient war scene with two dark tones of black and yellow. Although the film was released in 2007, Zanede had completed all the preliminary work as early as 2004. On September 17, 2005, the film was started in the ice storm studio in Montreal, Canada, and the part that needed actors' performance was completed in only two months.
