1963 In the spring, when the first fresh graduates of the Department of Transportation of Lanzhou Railway Institute did their graduation project, Lin Damei personally instructed two students to do the topic of compiling train diagram with electronic computer. Today, although these two graduation projects are still immature, they were valuable explorations at that time. 1974 collaborated with Xia Zezheng to compile the book Fundamentals of Computer Programming, which was published by People's Railway Publishing House on 1976. Starting from 1980, with the assistance of Zhao Hongyuan and Zheng, I directed two graduate students to write two master's theses: Analysis and Research of Railway Freight Car Management Information System-Freight Car Database System and Freight Car Operation Query System. The establishment of the railway freight car management information system will be able to grasp the railway freight car dynamics in time and accurately, fundamentally change the backward situation that China railway relies on dispatchers at all levels to grasp and calculate the traffic flow, which is time-consuming and inaccurate, and is of great significance to organize the use of freight cars economically and reasonably and improve the railway transportation capacity. This is another new exploration of Lin Damei in the field of railway transportation. At present, the introduction of electronic computing technology has greatly enriched the theory of railway transportation, and the application of electronic computers in railway transportation is far more extensive and in-depth than twenty or thirty years ago, and has achieved certain results. The contribution advocated by Lin Damei is indispensable.
In the "Traffic Volume of the Encyclopedia of China" published by 1986, Lin Damei and Wu Feng jointly wrote the entry "Railway Operation": "The development trend of railway operation theory is to conduct quantitative, dynamic and systematic optimization research on railway operation activities with the help of modern scientific and technological achievements such as electronic computing technology and system engineering theory, and formulate corresponding mathematical models, so as to realize the optimization of railway operation and gradually realize railway operation. It can be seen that Lin Damei has a profound knowledge of railway transportation, mathematics and engineering, and can accurately predict the development prospects of the discipline in advance.
