What is melanosis coli?
This Weibo shocked many netizens, especially the beauty-loving women who often take aloe vera, detox capsules and other products. Wu Xingchuan, a colon (colon melanosis) after taking aloe vera for one year in normal colon, pointed out that aloe vera has nephrotoxicity and can cause kidney damage; The aloe preparation contains cinnabar (the main component of mercury sulfide), which can cause mercury poisoning and accumulate in organs such as brain, liver and kidney, causing permanent damage; Both mirabilite and rhubarb contain anthraquinone, diananthrone and their derivatives. Long-term use will lead to liver cirrhosis and electrolyte metabolism disorder, which is the main cause of melanosis coli. So what? Melanosis coli (MC) is a kind of mucosal pigmented lesion in which macrophages in the inherent membrane of colon contain lipofuscin, and it is a rare non-inflammatory benign and reversible disease. The etiology, pathogenesis and pigment source of melanosis coli are not clear, and it is mostly considered to be related to taking irritating laxatives for long-term constipation. In recent years, it has been reported that oral laxatives and diphenylmethane laxatives made from senna, rhubarb or aloe can cause melanosis coli. Diagnostic criteria of melanosis coli ① Endoscopically, the colonic mucosa is black, brown or dark gray, and the marginal and early lesions are yellow or pink, showing tiger skin stripes, betel nut sections or patches. ② Histological examination showed that there were a large number of large mononuclear cells in lamina propria with melanin infiltration and melanosis, and other layers of intestinal wall were normal. Melanosis coli is very common. Wu Xingchuan mentioned in Weibo that microscopic pictures of melanosis coli are common in gastroscopy rooms of every modern hospital. This statement was confirmed by experts in Nanjing. Professor Wu Yulin from the Department of Gastroenterology, Nanjing Gulou Hospital pointed out that this is not uncommon in clinic. Most patients with intestinal blackening are patients with long-term constipation. They often take senna leaves and other irritating drugs to promote excretion. Ding Shuqing, deputy chief physician of Nanjing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, also mentioned that doctors with "melanosis coli" have seen too much and can meet them every week. Basically, patients have a history of using laxatives. The age ranges from 20 to 70, with an average age of about 45. In order to achieve the effect of "acne beauty" and "slimming" in advertisements, some young women abuse some products that detoxify and beautify. In addition, many people lack knowledge about constipation and blindly take some laxatives containing rhubarb, senna and other ingredients. These two conditions greatly increase the incidence of melanosis coli. Experts say that this laxative can really relieve constipation, but there is no clinical data to support that this medicine is suitable for long-term use. Long-term use of these drugs will not only lead to dependence, but also damage the intestinal mucosa, leading to melanosis coli.
