"Mr. Pilates thinks that forced complete exhalation is the key to breathing." He instructs people to squeeze air out of their lungs like a wet towel. Pilates breathing can be described as backward and lateral three-way breathing, that is, the practitioner deeply inhales air into the back and sides of the chest.
